Only a Kiss opens on Katie and Chris. We follow them through-out their lives. For three-quarters of the story, we're left wondering if our two characters will ever get together, or if we'll find our happily ever after in an unexpected way. She does a wonderful job, and I thoroughly enjoyed this clean read.

Only a Kiss by Ines Bautista-Yao is a lovely afternoon read. I spent the whole time curled around my coffee mug, smiling and remembering innocent love. The author does a wonderful job of expressing the whole experience, the writing is blessedly error-free, and the illustrations are in keeping with the overall feel of the story. The author provides a glossary at the end for the few words that were new to me.

Recommended Read. Perfect for YA readers. This is a sweet romance. It is a clean read.

Only a Kiss starts off with that sweet, precocious whimsy of a Ramona book and moves into those first love blunders and aches we’ve all experienced at some level. It’s the Filipino version of the whole “falling for the girl next door” story. It felt so genuine that I wanted to jump right into the story and talk to Chris and Katie. I saw echoes of myself in both of them, and that made me both love them and want to shake some sense into them.

Bautista-Yao’s writing is solid and expressive. Romance is not a genre I generally enjoy because it gets too mushy without much depth of character. However, Chris and Katie are real. The progression of their relationship from childhood playmates through the rollercoaster of young infatuations and on to a mature and abiding love is touching. They overcome obstacles without and within, and that I can get into. This story was a real treat.

Oh, and the cover art is gorgeous!

This book showed how a beautiful friendship can blossom into authentic love. Some people really grow old loving each other more. I would love to share this story with young girls who are looking forward to their first date, first kiss, and more. I pray they find their first love to last a lifetime :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written story about friendship, relationship, commitment and pure, clean, unadulterated love. It all started with a kiss, and ended with a happily ever after.

Katie & Chris, best friends since little kids but never realized that they're perfect to each other. At age nine, both experienced their first kiss during a wedding. (I thought that was so cute, having a kid of my own who's also 9 years old & already sending love-letters to his crush). Katie & Chris remained friends all throughout highschool, with a slew of crushes, broken hearts, older brothers and new-found friends in between. It wasn't until Chris made a sketch/drawing of Katie when he realized he must have been in love with his best friend all along. But Andrew was already in the picture, so where did that leave him?

I liked that there is character growth and seamless plot in Only A Kiss. The author takes you on a spin as she blends romance and angsty teenage drama perfectly. In this era of gadgets, tablets, & internet, sometimes all you need is a sketch or a drawing of that special someone to realize that your true love is just in front of you, no wi-fi connection needed. You will see yourself laugh, love, swoon, cringe, grin, and even cry. Wonder if there's something I didn't like in the book? Well, there is - the fact that the story ended after a kiss - on page 106! (On my Kindle, that is). Seriously, I could have gone on reading about Chris & Katie forever. I love the feeling of being love when reading books like this, especially since it’s Valentine’s Day. But the book has to end. Is it too much to ask for a sequel, Miss Ines Bautista-Yao? You deserve two thumbs up and a kiss from me :)

Seriously, I didn't want to stop reading, missed a step, and almost fell down the stairs. Deadly book.
The strength of this book is in the characterization and the believable narration which ages with the kids. They feel like kids, then teens, then young adults. They are likable and relatable throughout, with believable foibles as well as strength.
I liked that this kept its non-US setting without feeling confusing to someone who has never been there, just enough non-English words thrown in to give it character (there's a glossary in the back, but I never needed it).
My only two small quibbles were occasionally the story would skip forward in time and then catch us up with "what we'd missed" in the last few years through a quick "sum up" narrative. Once or twice I lost track of the timeline because of this, but only for a moment. Also, if you are considering this for a younger reader, there is some drinking at parties for fairly young characters.

I really enjoyed this lighthearted read and finished it quickly. It's a happy, hopeful, interesting love story.

I think it's safe to say that everyone remembers their first kiss--whether it was awkward, amazing, or even gross. This story took that nostalgic experience a step further by describing all the surrounding events taking place in the lives of a typical young boy and girl as he/she explored their feelings with other people in relationships outside of their 'friendship bubble'. They are faced with feelings for other people and each other during the course of growing up, realizing along the way that sometimes your whole life can be changed by one little innocent moment like your first kiss, whether you realize it or not at the time.

This was a beautifully-written, pleasant read for me. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a sweet story about young love.
