Kirkus -- The author infuses some lovely imagery and Mexican folklore into this overall pleasing offering. An appealing coming-of-age story that will engage reluctant readers. -- NetGalley -- 5/5 stars. I cried on the last page. This was so amazing. I've always loved poetry, but reading stories in verse is so different from poems that have no correlations to each other. I loved the feelings this gave me--the writing, the plot, as well as the characters. You don't always get to read stories about gay teens that are just trying to get through life, but when you do, oh my, they are amazing. -- NetGalley -- I absolutely loved this coming-of-age story. Such wonderful characters and the right feel--as someone who is gay and was scared to come out, this was such a perfect representation of how it feels.

I really loved this book. Even though, I've been out for many years. It took me back to a time when I wasn't. Those feelings of fear and longing. Feeling like you've fallen in love but fear that it will always be unrequited. The worried over family acceptance and what that means in your life. Coming out is such a personal process and can looked different for everyone. Culture, religion, and so many things can play a roll in that process. However, the one constant is that we all go through it. We all face the fear. This book supports us and reminds us that we are not alone. Whether you are 15 years old or 50 years old. Coming out is a scarry road. But with literature like this we don't have to feel alone. The writing style makes this book a quick and easy read. But, the message sinks deep into the heart. Great book! Highly Recommend!

In his new novel Only Pieces, Edd Tello has created an intimate look inside the life of Edgar, the high school age son of illegal Mexican immigrants. We are invited into Edgar’s thoughts and feelings as he deals with his emerging same sex attractions. Though this novel is classified as a middle grade young adult read, it will captivate all ages with its lyrical verse style. I read it cover to cover in one sitting, and I am definitely much older than the young adult category.

I was captivated by Tello’s vivid imagery and stimulating word choice. He created genuine 3 dimensional characters by vividly using what they do and say rather than using tedious third person description to develop his characters and the story arc. I felt like I knew his characters personally. I cared about them, the true magic of a good story teller. This story is such a page turner and so rich with natural dialog that it is near script ready for the big screen.

Only Pieces is not a detective thriller but it is definitely a page turner. Tello’s story telling ability makes us want to see how each segment turns out and how each scene flawlessly flows into the next. It is a smooth read with no breaks in believability. If you have never read a novel told in blank verse, I highly recommend Only Pieces as your first. It will be a perfect introduction. For those familiar with this style, I think you will be very impressed by Tello’s talent and skill.

Tello has always been a remarkable human being, as I have been a follower of his for quite some time on social media! And his storytelling is truly mesmerizing! I finished this book in one sitting and re-read it a third time before writing this review to see if the emotions would hit differently. They did; each read, I felt more and more driven to tears and laughter and tears and then relief! God bless Alison, what a hype-woman! I see a lot of myself in Alison and Edgar! Feeling isolated from family due to your views on life, plus being everyone's hype woman while also setting yourself up in a downward spiraling relationship--classic!
But the writing style is what truly moves me the most! Tello does a fantastic job composing poetry and utilizing it as a driving tool for straightforward storytelling. It's incredible, and as a visual person, I can visualize the characters' expressions and appearances much more clearly. I wish this were a bit longer, but I am a sucker for a deep heavy story! But I will say, I love how it ends on a beautiful note! I would recommend this author again!

An Exquisite Tale in Verse full of Hispanic and LGBTQ Culture

Only Pieces is a Hi/Lo (high interest, low readability) novel written in verse and follows Edgar, a gay Mexican-American high school boy. Being Mexican-American, his family is very tied to their culture, and part of that culture is heterosexual marriage. While Edgar's mom knows he likes boys, she always pushes him to keep his secret hidden, because they both know dad won't receive that information well.

Edgar has one friend and one friend only he can trust with his secret. Or so he thinks, but when he gets picked on by one of the most popular guys in school, he has his doubts. He happens to have a crush on one of his (part-time) neighbors, though he isn't quite sure how to go about hanging out with him.

This novel is about self-identity as well as learning how to navigate the social aspects that come with being gay. Edgar has to learn how to talk to his family and friends about who he is, and he has to learn how to find the courage to share who he is with other people, such as possible love interests.

This is an extremely fast and engaging read. I love books in verse, and this is one of the more intriguing ones out there. It has so much culture and diversity in such few words, a craft worthy of praise. An excellent book for any teen reader, lover of poetry, LGBTQ or Mexican-American experience interest, or someone who just wants to read a quick, but meaningful, story.

Thanks NetGalley and West 44 Books for the eARC of Only Pieces, these opinions are my own. This was such a quick read and I really enjoyed it! I’m finding I really like books written in verse! Edgar is out to his mom but she often ignores this and when his dad comes home from his job in another place Edgar worries more about how he’ll react to the information! Things get more complicated when his crush’s Dad moves into their building and they begin to develop a relationship. Edgar’s story is very relatable! I think he was shy, charming, confident, forgiving, and patient! I feel like the story carried with it the idea of hope, which I think we all could use, especially now! If you like stories written in verse I highly recommend this one, Edd Tello does a fantastic job! I’m excited to add this one to my book collection!
