As a huge Susan Mallery fan, I found myself counting down the days until "Only Yours" came out. I had read the four previous books in the Fools Gold series and this book was well-worth the wait.

This time out we are looking at Montana Hendrix of the Hendrix triplets. She is finally finding her own way in this story and found a career that she loves working with therapy dogs. Unfortunately, one over zealous put gets her in to trouble with the new doctor in town, Dr. Simon Bradley. Simon is a surgical genius but not at all very good with dealing with people. The good folks of Fools Gold hope to convince him to stay in their little town and enlist the help of Montana to do so - not knowing that she and Simon already got off to a rocky start.

This is a Beauty and the Beast kind of story. Simon was badly scarred as a child and now works as a plastic surgeon to help others heal from similar wounds. He is awkward and short tempered but deep down he is really looking for acceptance. He's a perfect candidate for Fools Gold - a town known for taking in those in need.

This story grabbed me from the get-go and I had a hard time putting it down. It is a great addition to the Fools Gold series and a must read if you are a Susan Mallery fan.

In the second of the latest Fool's Gold trilogy by Susan Mallery, we get Montana Hendrix and Simon Bradley...so far, my favorite couple of the triplet Hendrix sisters. Mostly, it's all about Simon. While we meet him not at his best, it quickly becomes obvious that he's wounded, inside and out, and Montana is just the right person to heal him. Whereas the first book in the trilogy didn't quite hit the spot, this one kept my attention and touched my heart. As Simon struggles to heal others, he refuses to believe he is worthy of healing himself. Montana, who has a family who gives her unconditional love, still struggles with believing she's enough for a man, but she's willing to put herself out there for Simon to see, flaws and all. Their love story is sexy and sweet and brought tears to my eyes more than once.

Of course, as with all the Fool's Gold books, Mallery populates them with a lot of great secondary characters and we revisit many of them again on Only Yours. I also loved the secondary stories of Montana working with the service dogs, her mother's ventures into the dating world (I have a feeling we'll see more of that later) and best of all, the story of Kalinda, the little burn victim Simon is caring for. All of this adds up to a truly emotionally satisfying story. Can't wait to read Only His, book 3!

I would have liked this a whole lot better if the hero hadn't been so robotic. The reader is expected to believe that a man who has walled himself off emotionally and only indulges (infrequently) his physical appetites with a dinner-and-sex date is actually immensely skilled in bed and a witty conversationalist. Paging Dr. Robotico! He mostly appears as someone who is verbally stiff, not just introspective, almost as if he's unaccustomed to the normal give-and-take of daily life. Since he's also portrayed as an enormously talented surgeon who is sought after all over the world, with years of experience, there's quite a clash here. Montana, the free-spirited heroine who trains therapy dogs and lives in the moment, is the obvious Opposites Attract heroine. I had no particular response to her, pro or con. This is the 10th book I've read out of a 15-book series (as of 2014), though I haven't been reading them in order. The series appears to be comprised of trilogies, as if the author originally got a book contract for a trilogy, then renewed the contract as the series proved successful. I can see where the success comes in. The setting is Fool's Gold, a small town where everyone is benevolently nosy, secrets are hard to hide, but caring and goodwill are universal. Recurring secondary characters add a nice touch, such as Mayor Marsha, the longest-serving mayor in California. I became addicted to it with the first book I read, which was the last book issued so far (the series shows no signs of ending any time soon). There are the usual tropes for Romanceland: the heroes are inevitably taller, more handsome, and often more wealthy than the average man. The heroines are likewise more beautiful, more accomplished, and more endearing than the average woman.Read more ›

Believable characters are important, especially so in romances. You already know the general plot and how it will turn out, right? I once refused to finish reading a book because it the characters were entirely unbelievable (15th century Scottish warrior telling the heroine to take a hot bath and relax didn't ring true). Susan Mallery's "Only Yours" is at the opposite end of that spectrum. Her characters are fully realized and completely believable.

Montana Hendrix trains therapy dogs. She gives her whole heart her career, in part because she struggled for so long to find her passion. Simon Bradley is a surgeon specializing in traumatically injured children. Their first meeting is a disaster, but soon the sparks are flying. There's just one catch - Simon isn't staying in Fool's Gold.

How Montana deals with this is one of the things that made her so believable to me. She knows that what she and Simon share is special, even if it isn't lasting. She doesn't try to change Simon but loves him as he is. Her love heals, just as much Simon's surgical skills...and in much the same way as the affection the therapy dogs she trains.

As always, I adore the secondary characters and catching up on people introduced earlier in the Fool's Gold series. I'd love to live in that town! But what I love most about this book is Montana and Simon. They are vibrant, realistic, and completely believable.
