Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-A well-researched look at the past and present of Canada's most populous province. Ferry gives ample attention to Ontario's history, geography, links to the United States, current political and social issues, and cultural diversity. The well-organized text has a time line of major events in both Canadian and Ontario history and anecdotes that support the text. Despite the quality of the information, the presentation is somewhat lackluster. The textbook look and black-and-white photographs do little to stir readers' interest. While more current than Kathryn MacKay's Ontario (Children's, 1992; o.p.) and Suzanne LeVert's Ontario (Chelsea, 1991; o.p.), those titles are livelier reads and more attractive. Students may find Ferry's volume useful for reports but they are unlikely to pick it up for general interest reading.

From Booklist

Reviewed with Brett J. Palana's British Columbia.

Gr. 6-9. These books from the Exploring Canada series offer succinct overviews of the each province's geography, its political, social, and cultural history, and the lives of its people today. Each book also considers the history and ongoing concerns of its First Nations peoples. Ontario spotlights the region's rich natural resources and ends with the challenges and promise of living in the province's culturally diverse society. British Columbia discusses matters such as conservation of natural resources and the particular concerns of Asian Canadians. The black-and-white illustrations include many period and contemporary photos and some helpful maps. Though the books have a lackluster look and small print, the information is clear and sidebars are well-focused articles on topics of interest. Each book concludes with several pages of fast facts, source notes for quotations, a chronology, a source bibliography, and an annotated list of recommended reading. The usefulness of the bibliographies is limited by their emphasis on general books about Canada rather than books on the provinces under discussion. Carolyn Phelan
