It's annoying that the original, bigger RAT 1 is usually little cheaper than just as great but smaller RAT II. Among knives under $30, there are no knives that I know of that has a better fit and finish than Ontario RAT series knives and I've gone through a bunch of them. The design is very ergonomic, the fit and finish is superb. AUS 8 is excellent budget steel that holds its edge well and is easy to resharpen. The blade came razor sharp out of the box and perfectly centered. The pivot has phosphor bronze washers with Teflon spacers for ultra smooth opening action. Pillar construction allows for easy cleaning and the 4 way pocket clip is held in place with three Torx screws and has the right balance of spring tension and sturdiness. Only improvement I can suggest for both RAT 1 and RAT 2 knives are milled out liners for weight reduction. Otherwise, they are perfect. If I ever lose or wear out mine, I would get a replacement, no matter how many knives I own.

I bought this as a replacement for a RAT 1 knife I gave away to a friend. The RAT 1 was well made, but a little big for everyday pocket carry. This one is perfect, excellent edge retention for moderate daily use, great size and weight. The fit and finish are awesome and the price can't be beat for a knife of this quality. Seriously, if you are thinking of a pocket knife, this is much better than some knives at twice the price. I've heard some reviews of the RAT folding knives saying that they are 'great if you don't mind a simple looking knife' however I actually really find the knife attractive and different from many others I own. Only downside to either RAT I've owned is that the screws have a tendency to back out a little. I've never had one fall out, and they tighten right up easily. There is a bit of blue locking compound on them, so I doubt they would back out much further on their own. The ergonomics of the knife fit well in my hand, allowing a very comfortable 3 to 3.5 finger grip.
The finishing touches and the overall build quality are outstanding - way better than the Kershaw knives that I own. The knife is made in Taiwan. Taiwan is a city like New York or Tokyo that used to be known for cheap knock-offs.and rip-offs, but it is not part of China. The city has grown to be a center of industry and commerce known as a provider of high quality products and detailed production. Think of how Chrysler grew from the K-car in the 80's and to the 300M or 300C now, and I would compare this knife to any fine automobile made anywhere today. While I would prefer the knife said USA, I am not disappointed that it is made in Taiwan, and neither should you.

Here's the highlights: -very well made blade of pretty decent steel for the price -very useful blade shape with a great grind from factory. -excellent grip considering the uses for a small folder -no problems with the factory condition. -for the money this is one of the best knives I've ever owned.
After reading all the positive reviews for this knife all over the internet I recently decided to buy one and try it out. I usually carry an assisted opening knife but I wanted a carry knife option that wasn't assisted in case I found myself in a location that it was illegal to carry an assisted blade. If you just want to know my opinion and be off then know this is a very nice blade for the money. You could buy 4 or 5 of these things for the price of many other comparable knives. Based on quality this knife would still be a good option if it were 3 times more expensive then it is.
The knife was a little smaller than I expected but I have a feeling that's just because I've been carrying a Sog Trident for a few years which is a larger knife and I'm used to it by now. The knife was in great shape when it arrived and there was a coating of oil on the blade. The aus8 steel was very sharp and nicely ground. There were no chips, knicks, scratches, etc from the factory. I haven't had any reason to open it up and look at the internals but I'm sure they are about the quality you'd expect in a high quality value knife.
The jimping is excellent. It is very easy to get a good grasp on the knife despite being fairly compact. The handle is a little smooth and if I had a complaint that might be it. However with the jimping and the little finger groove for your index finger I have no fear of being able to hang on to it. The Rat 2 is fairly compact so I wouldn't expect to be doing anything incredibly tough with it anyway. It might be more of a noticable flaw with the larger Rat 1 but I will probably be buying the larger Rat in the future anyway. If it's the same quality of its smaller brother I'm sure it's worth it to have both.
I haven't had to sharpen the blade yet but it's Aus8 steel. In use I haven't noticed any flaws with the heat treatment so I'm going to go ahead and assume it's a quality tempered Aus8 blade that acts like aus8 should. Fairly tough stuff that's not too difficult to keep sharp. It doesn't chip easily and it should last as long as you want it. I really like the blade shape surprisingly. It's a very useful sweep that kind of reminds me of a kitchen knife but that makes it very utilitarian. It has a strong tip too so I'm not very worried about it breaking. I have a kershaw leek I sometimes carry but I've never liked the fragile blade shape with those. This doesn't seem like a knife you'd have to worry about. As I've said all throughout this review, I really like the knife. It isn't the greatest knife ever made. It isn't even the nicest I currently own. However for the price you pay it is excellent quality. There's really nothing wrong with it. The blade is a high quality (mid grade) steel, the ergonomics are good, and the value is exceptional. I like the design and I think it works exactly how it was intended. I recommend the knife to anyone that wants something to carry and use. You probably wont impress a knife snob carrying it, but it will do its job just as well as whatever benchmade or overpriced 300$ knife they tell you you should have bought. And when they lose their knife and cry themselves to sleep you can revel in the fact that you could loose 8 of these and still not have lost as much money as them.

I bought this knife two years ago and have to say that it's one of my favorites. It's very well-made and offered at a great price. For the money, this is the best edc knife out there. Blade centering is perfect, lock up is very secure, and the AUS-8 steel is respectable and easy to sharpen. The blade shape is appropriate for just about any task. The knife is fairly lightweight and slim, perfect for pocket carry. The pocket clip is secure and rides at a decent depth but is not deep carry. The clip is tight but not overly tight. I have never had it fall out of my pocket. The clip can be positioned on all four sides of the knife using a Torx driver, making it lefty-friendly. The G10 handle scales are tough and provide adequate grip. Pillar construction makes this knife a breeze to keep clean. I can just blow out any pocket lint or dust. Phosphor bronze washers are a plus and make this knife smooth and easy to open. Jimping on the blade is adequate for my needs. Thumb studs work well in deploying the blade. This knife fits my hand perfectly (I wear a men's large size glove). If you have extra large hands, you may want to consider the Rat 1 instead. I can't think of a single reason not to recommend this Rat 2. It's an excellent knife, a joy to use, and easy on the wallet. After two years of using this knife, I can honestly say that I would immediately buy another if I lost this one. Buy this knife!
I heard so much about this knife I had to give it a go. Almost legendary. Well, it's ok. Not amazing. I think I would probably like the Rat 1 better due to its larger size. The quality on my Rat 2 was well, not great. See pic as the blade a full mil off centre. Actually dont think it could be more off centre and open and close. Think you'd have better luck with the Chinese knock offs that are 25-30% the price. I will try one for comparison and report back.

I really love this knife.
It wasn't in stock when I ordered it and I had to wait a good while for it to come, but it was totally worth it. I'd previously saw a good number of video reviews on it, all saying great things. It has a lovely smooth action and a nice feeling grip. They both just feel right and make the knife a joy to use. The blade is sharp and cuts things well, as you'd expect.
It's a little more expensive than buying it in it's native country, however in the UK most folding knives are. Amazon had the best price I could find at the time.

Put simply this knife is stunning for the price (around £35 delivered) It's blade is razor sharp, well centered and the whole knife is superbly built with very close tolerances. I had purchased a more expensive spyderco knife that I sent back as I was unhappy with the finish. When this one turned up I was amazed just how much better built it is. The crowning glory is its one hand opening, it's beautiful. It opens easily with a flick of the thumb and locks up solid with zero play in any direction. Recommended

Great little knife for the money. Compared with my spiderco ukpk one handed opening has taken a little longer to master but now I have the hang of the thumb stud it opens like a dream, it opens very fast where as with the spiderco i can open it slows as as not to alam.Flicking the knife open is very satisfying lock ups super firm and there's no play at all. Very happy would rather have an edc knife at this price point and use it rather than a blade a double or triple the cost.
