Kevin Howard has written a lean, cogent and easily digestible book about the roots of the division in America and what is needed to turn it around. He writes that the American values of independence and self-interest have evolved to express themselves as greed and separation. Combine those qualities with free-market capitalism, and you have the equation for the scarcity and division we are experiencing. The most poignant realization for me was Howard's position on capitalism and education. When our ability to become educated and learn marketable skills is accessible to only an elite group, it creates an unsustainable income disparity where the unskilled group will always be dependent on the skilled group.
Howard envisions a world where success is measured not by our investments but by our contribution to humanity as a whole. The way forward requires a major paradigm shift, one I question we can pull off. Our best chance to thrive as a species is through a shift in consciousness that eschews competition and supports every person in reaching their potential. Howard believes we still have a chance to find a way to shift our focus from personal wealth to collective fulfillment.
I really enjoyed this book. Kevin Howard is a skilled, clean writer. He covers more territory than many writers could with three times as many words. Howard communicates complex issues with clarity.
Howard believes fulfillment is possible when all of us are free to make choices independently of the need for money. We need to move toward a resource management based economy where the work we contribute expresses who we are and what we are good at, not what we have to do to pay the rent.
