The vest is folded up inside the bag, which is closed with three long strips of velcro along the bottom edge. When the package arrives new, the CO2 cartridge is not installed. It easy to install and the directions are clear.
As per the instructions I manually inflated the vest and let it sit over night to test it for leaks, and it held air for 24 hours with no discernible loss of inflation. The manual fill tube worked perfectly for inflating, and then by turning the cap around it deflated quickly. It can be a bit tricky to get all the air our, but that's true of most inflatable devices.
Refolding the vest into the pack is also easy per the instructions. The belt tightens like most webbed belts, and the pad for the small of your back (the vest rides on your front) has some mesh to help it breath. It may get hot on hot days, but still nothing to compare to a full vest.
One thing I did not pick up on from the description is that this pack comes with a marine whistle, stowed in the front zipper pouch of the pack. I had already bought one, so now I have two. Also, I purchased the recharging kit to have it on hand, should I eve need it. It comes with a new CO2 cylinder and the green plastic tab that keeps the lever for inflating from opening prematurely.
I am very pleased with this pack, and am buying one for my wife and her board. I highly recommend!
very disappointed with amazon.com
I did use it at an end of the ski season pond skim at the local ski resort. You try to ski across, I stopped dead in my tracks in about 4 feet of water and pulled it as a joke, in about 5 seconds it was rock hard and I pulled it over my head, I would trust it if needed, just $15 for a re-arm kit...
