I give this book 5 out of 5 clouds.
I had to do it, folks, because I’d read Book One this past January in one amazing sitting—I reread Book One just to remember why I had enjoyed it so much, and to recall the personality quirks of the varied characters and the plot intricacies. Then on to Book Two.
It is a quick read, especially for those of us who read a lot, as well as because it is almost impossible to finish a chapter, or an episode, and lay the book/Kindle aside to go to sleep. You can sleep later. Read now.
What I found remarkable in Book Two was how seamlessly the delicately woven stories continued from the previous book. This book is also darker, with some characters facing some decidedly unpleasant events, meeting people who are generally not what they appear to be, suffering, and surviving. There are little bits and pieces popping up here and there that show that neither the main characters nor their disparate locations and timeframes are unconnected, or their stories evolving on their own with no relevance to each other. There are ties, tenuous at first, not fully explained, but there. So hold that thought, because I have the distinct feeling that the ties will continue to develop slowly, carefully, until at the end what now looks like a spider’s web without beginning, end, or recognizable pattern, will emerge as something truly remarkable.
One other aspect of Book Two that sailed right past me in Book One is how the authors subtly differentiate the way each of the characters is presented in the brief sections of each episode. The writing is always clear, almost spare, but still manages to give Onyx a voice discernable from that of Juniper, or Koda, or the insufferable socialite, Mika Flagler. I suppose that’s not so difficult in a long book like a saga that goes on and on, for instance, and very tricky to pull off in a book that is scarcely longer than a novella, and when every word must truly count.
As I’ve said before, I don’t do paranormal/fantasy/alternate stuff. I run away from serials. I can also admit when I’ve been wrong, close-minded, or just a bit off. In the case of Onyx Webb, I am happy to say I’ve been caught in her as-yet unfinished silken trap. And since there will be eight more books, and if they reach me at the rate of one every six months, then I am a happy reader.
Yep, I received Book Two from the authors in exchange for my honest review. Take a look at all my reviews, folks—I am nothing if not honest, and snarky, and sparing with praise. Yet when I like something, I really like it. This book I love.
