I have used a lot of study Bibles over the last 25 years and this is one of the best. I love the cyclopedic index which is over 200 pages long. It defines a term, such as "peace" and then shows key incidences of it in the Bible. The type face is easy to read and there are in-text charts, maps and word studies. The New Living Translation is a good translation for personal devotional reading and public reading as well. This Bible also shows good workmanship and you will be pleased with it. I use this study Bible along with the New American Standard Ryrie Study Bible.

I heard about the "Open Bible" but never saw it. When Billy Graham referenced it in his book "Angels," I had to find it for myself. Glad I did, because this edition helps you dive deeply into the intricacies of the King James Version of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and Greek Bible (New Testament). The study aids include: a 300+ page Biblical Cyclopedic Index (for instance: "Ulla"--burden, Descendant of Asher, 1 Chr. 7:30, 39 [page] 412); book introductions and outlines; Bible Study Helps (11 sections, such as "Read Your Bible Through in a Year"); Biblical Information (17 sections, from reference information ["The Jewish Calendar"]) to literary history ["The English Bible and its Development"], with keys to using this edition). An abbreviated Concordance (62 pages) ends the book, with 8 maps. If you need a fuller atlas, see "Zondervan Atlas of the Bible," by Carl G. Rasmussen (2010). Words of Christ in red. Copyright is 1985. Only drawback: the pages are so thin, the text on the reverse side of the page is visible. Highly recommended to Protestants as a study Bible.

It is concise and easy to find everything, it has just enough extra information that you are not inundated with stuff you might never need or use it goes where ever you go without any problems

This is an excellent study Bible that contains an abundant concordance, maps, information on Biblical cities and events, and study notes. In the previous review, the writer pointed out that they do not have a conversion chart for measurements, which is entirely correct. Had he actually read the Bible, however, he would have realized that in the New Living Translation the measurements are already converted to modern units. Furthermore, as far as the study notes go, the verses are marked that contain a study note at the bottom of the page. I believe this is an excellent Bible that not only lets you read the Word of God, but encourages you to have a more complete understanding of it.

I have always loved the Open Bible and was so excited when I found this large print version NKJV. If you are looking for a real study bible without a lot of editorial personal commentary, this bible is for you. Each book has an introduction that discusses the authorship, time frame, key verses, and brief overview. It is followed by a thorough topical outline (chapter/verse). These two features alone are worth the price of the bible. There are also numerous references throughout the chapters and key word study definitions.

Between the 2 testaments is a visual survey of the bible which has charts and illustrations about the time lines of the Old and New Testaments, the life of Christ, history of Israel, etc., a wonderful resource. There are color maps in the back and a small concordance. There is also a guide for Christian workers, a guide for new converts, archaeological updates, and a cyclopedic index that covers almost every subject you can think of (from names like Aaron to Zuzim-- and characteristics like ability to zeal). For example, if you look up faith, it has the definition, uses of the word and the corresponding scriptures that refer to each context. Again, it is worth the price of the bible alone.

Incidentally, this index is why this only gets 4 instead of 5 stars. This is a large print bible, but the index is in mice-print. I don't know why the publishers decided to enlarge the print of everything except this; maybe this would have made the bible too large and heavy, but it's still disappointing to have to reach for a pair of reading glasses to see it. The cover is heavy duty and sturdy enough to last many years. The print is clear and very readable (Times Roman font), but it could have been a little larger.

(I own 0785205462.) If you read my other reviews of Bibles, you'll see I'm a stickler when it comes to various printing and Bible construction methods. I'm not the biggest fan of Thomas Nelson because they always seem to have trouble printing up their Bibles with an even ink color from page to page. This one is no exception, but I'm very pleased by it being available in the New Living Translation.
The Open Bible overall is very good. But if you're interested in investing in only one study Bible, I strongly suggest Thomas Nelson's "Nelson Study Bible."
I'm happy to have this one in my library.
[addition] Almost forgot; another great plus is there's a very good dictionary in this Study Bible. The great this is they've placed it before, not after, the Bible. I really like this idea because now Genisis, Exodus, etc. have a nice buffer between themselves and the front cover. This will greatly reduce the wear to the front books of the bible because your opening Genisis 1/4 into the book! Well, I think it's great. Cheers!
