Editorial Reviews

A man (Sharlto Copley, DISTRICT 9, ELYSIUM) wakes up in a pit of dead bodies with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Fleeing the scene, he breaks into a nearby house and is met at gunpoint by a group of terrified strangers, all suffering from memory loss. Suspicion gives way to violence as the group starts to piece together clues about their identities, but when they uncover a threat that's more vicious -- and hungry -- than each other, they are forced to figure out what brought them all together -- before it's too late.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw the trailer, and was disappointed that this movie didn't release in theaters in my area, but was well worth watching online regardless. At first glace, may seem like a rollercoaster of mismatched characters, seeking explanation to who they are and where they are, and why, but intrigue takes over as they begin to recollect their pasts, and madness takes over. They find they are not alone, and are not who they think they are, nor are their circumstances as seemingly simple. There is a more sinister plan at work, but one which they do not quickly figure out until it becomes all too clear that it is not mere madness taking over, but madness that is coming to get them and they must work together, with frenzied memories of what brought them together, all too slowly coming back to them, but will they remember in time to stave off the impending mystery of what is to happen on the 18th? Very enjoyable and suspenseful

It was a smart twist on what would have otherwise been a tired premise. My gf made me watch it because Joseph Morgan is in it. He and Sharlto Copley did a good job pulling me into the story though and the movie was pleasingly dark for a horror fan like myself. 4 stars because it did get a little slow at times and it wasn't the most gratuitous with the violence, but it WAS just f&%$ed up enough for me to like it.

DON'T WATCH THE TRAILER!!! We watched it afterwards and it really gives a lot away.

This, my friends, is actually a surprisingly intense movie. Stellar acting by the entire cast. Copley is obviously the main actor, but really, everybody shines in this one. The characters were believable and the plot was compelling. In fact, although I wont ruin the story by really discussing it at all (and actually, any discussion regarding the story could easily be a spoiler), but you will realize at some point while watching it that the movie actually takes a tired genre and revitalizes it with a whole new approach.

Now, I doubt this is a movie many people will watch more than once, but man is it worth watching at least once. Suspense, psychological horror, mystery...this movie has a lot going for it.

Rather good. I was very pleased with it. Typically not my type of movie. The originality of it, and how it played out, really worked well. If you want hack and slash, this isn't it. If you need a scare a second, this isn't it. But if you want to be brought into the story, along with the actors, into things you aren't sure you want to know? If you want a somewhat original take on a subset of monsters? If you want to place bets, sometimes winning, more often losing, on what is really happening, and has happened? Yeah.

I generally am more of an action movie, even for horrors, sort of viewer. So this is pretty good praise. The reason I only gave it four stars is repeatability. For me, once the genie was out of the bottle, watching it again seemed pointless. I would rather have to watch it again, or at least want to see it again for things I may have missed. At the pace it goes, that shouldn't be a need. For most. Good acting, decent scoring (for as little as I care, when it is bad it messes up the mood). Just a very sound movie, all around. Just not, as I said, if to me, a movie to watch again.

Open Grave is a better than average mystery/ horror type flick.
Overall, it rates somewhere between a 3 to 4 star rating. Definitely worth a rainy day rental or a late night viewing if you're in the mood for a decent mystery.
The acting is adequate. Of the several main characters, some provide above average performances that help draw the viewer into this who-done-it.
Given the overall theme and cinematography, one might even draw loose comparisons of this flick to the Walking Dead. No, this isn't as good as the Walking Dead. However, we are given a group of people who wander around wooded areas and dirt roads and happen to come across buildings inhabited by zombies. Some of this scenery is reminiscent of what you'd see while watching the Walking Dead.
Again, this may not be a top 5 or top 10 movie for fans of the mystery/ horror genre, but, still worth the watch.
With a plot twist near the end of the movie, everything wraps up nice and neatly.

I really liked this film. I've adored Sharlto since District 9 so I rented as soon as it was available. There are some twists and it had a nice ending that tied everything up like the previous review said. Actually liked this more than World War Z. It didn't rely on effects but it was more gritty and down to earth horror which focused on location (the pit, shacks hidden in the woods, secret labs in the basement) which helped the story because being lost in the woods is bad enough, but to have no memory and no one knows if they trust each other. Not to mention the 'creatures/people' living in the woods! It give it a realistic approach to terror. I'm actually sick of gory movies bring back more films with a story and suspense like in the days of John Carpenter's Halloween and Jaws.

I went into this without any expectations. What a pleasant surprise as this film cleverly leads us on an relentless thriller/mystery from start to finish. While films where people all wake up without memory is not a new concept, this one takes us in an unexpected direction and the ending comes out of left field. As another reviewer stated, do not watch the trailer for this film before going in, it will give away all of the good stuff and ruin the movie. Go into this without any back story, other than the fact a man wakes up in a pit of bodies without his memory, only to encounter a house with people, all who are without their memories as well. This thing had me guessing all the way to the very end, and though I had some rough ideas, the ending still got me by surprise.
