The pillow in the title begins life as a very small pillow with an inherent awareness of its own opportunities. The pillow also has big dreams, and steadfastly fulfils them, thus realising its own potential. Lying in a flower bed, various creatures visit pillow, each larger than the one before. Forever embracing the challenge, unfolding and doubling in size, pillow attempts to accommodate them all. He continues to grow until eventually he is fit for the purpose he was meant for; his place in life being found.
When first asked to review this book, I was not quite sure what to expect. What I found upon reading was the most delightful and beautifully written book, akin to a modern fairy tale. It conveys a terrific message about persevering until you reach your goal. I have never read anything quite like this before, at least not in modern literature - in fact, David Rowinski seems to have created a story that is really quite unique. And, to add to the joy, there are the fabulous, near magical illustrations by artist Dea Lenihan, which bring the book to life.
I highly recommend The Open Pillow. I have no doubt it will one day become a children's classic, or at least I hope it will.

This children's book reminded me of fables I used to love as a child. I applaud the author for thinking outside the box and was delightfully surprised that he used a simple pillow to convey such important messages. There are many morals children can learn from this short story. Some I thought of were "never give up on your dreams", "don't settle for less than you want and deserve", and "everything has a purpose, no matter how big or small." The illustrations are beautiful and help bring the story to life. I would recommend this story to parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers. Children will love it!

I approached Open Pillow with some curiosity, not knowing exactly what to expect. I knew it was a sort of short story, and the title in itself gave nothing away of the content.
Well, it was a most pleasant surprise, and something I'd never have expected.
For a moment, I found myself going back in time, and I thought I was reading again one of Aesop's or Phaedrus' wonderful Greek and Latin "fables", all very short but all containing a wealth of meaning and wise teachings for those who were able to read between the lines.
The same is true for Open Pillow, which is much more than what it appears at a first glance. Its words stay with the reader and invite reflection, as the book "opens" up and offers its inner treasures.
And what make this little gem shine even more brightly, enriching it and appeasing the eye together with the mind, are the wonderful, almost magic illustrations by Dea Lenihan that enhance the fabulistic effect of the whole work.
Open Pillow makes the reader's soul the richer for having read it.

My 3-year-old, 7-year-old and I, read "The Open Pillow," and we all enjoyed this book. The artwork was beautiful, and the book's overall message: fitting in spaces you don't belong is nothing we should fret over; we outgrow people, places and things as we evolve. Not to mention, those places in which we go, hoping to "fit in" or mold to our surroundings, are temporary; finding our perfect fit lasts a lifetime.

Here are my 7-year-old's thoughts on "The Open Pillow."

"My favorite was the part when the cat ran away, because it was funny. It made me sad, when the pillow couldn't find his match. I learned, the word near-sighted means you can't see far away. I like the part when he found his match.

Small as the pillow started out in its position in the world, it still knew it had a purpose in life. I loved the way David showed, in the growth of the pillow, how nothing and no one has to stay bound and useless by what can be deemed their physical disabilities. Open Pillow can teach a child that just because you can not help one person it doesn't mean you have to give up on your dreams.

The illustrations are lovely, comforting and go so well with the way the words are designed to fit the pages in the book. I loved it and can't wait to read it to my grand baby.

*I received a copy of the book to read for review purposes.
