This is the perfect read for any teacher leader or administrator looking to pull their school out of the dark ages and into now! I’m so excited for my colleagues to read this so we can get started opening up education...together. -- Anna E. Baldwin, 2014 Montana Teacher of the Year
Haigler & Owens’ application of open source philosophies and practices in education is both brilliant and inspirational. -- Tom Callaway, University Outreach & Fedora Special Projects Director at Red Hat
Open Up, Education! should give hope to anyone who cares about transforming education. Haigler and Owens have articulated a vision for 21st century learning that finally breaks with an industrial-era understanding of how and why we learn. -- Aria F. I feel like this book is good for all educators, but is really essential for district level and building administrators who want to bring systemic change to their schools. I am an experienced PBL teacher and trainer of teachers and the schools who lay the groundwork as explained in this book of empowering teachers, collaboration, and innovation have the most successful transitions to PBL. I think reading and wrestling through its ideas with your staff would be a great way to move a traditional school to a place where it is ready for the PBL journey.
Chapter 6 was my favorite as it told the story of an Open Way school from the perspective of a student, teacher, principal, and parent. Critics might find it hyperbole but my school was just like this description and so is the authors' school. I also love the emphasis on needing to rebel and break away from traditions that have outlived their usefulness (if they ever had any in the first place).
I highly recommend this book to any educators looking to innovate and bring authentic learning experiences for all of their students! Administrators looking to move their staff to try to new things should definitely read it too.
