As an FYI, the printed version has black and white pages.
It is written clearly and covers a number of important basic topics well. These include: types of data, basic experimental/research design, elementary probability, distributions of random variables and the fundamentals of inference.
I think that the early introduction of inference, and associated concepts like standard errors, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing is excellent, since to me, it helps things 'hang together'. Elementary textbooks often seem to lack coherence.
My only qualm (or vague thought) is that *overall* it seems very conventional. I am a novice at statistics, but I have sampled a number of other textbooks and while I think this book does a much better job than many others, I wonder if another approach is needed. I say this on the basis of the serious problems that appear to exist in many research literatures. Possibly something for more sophisticated minds to ponder.
Nonetheless, this is a great book, which I think succeeds in its aims. I commend the authors for making the PDF free and for producing such an attractive book so cheaply.
I really hope they come out another edition that covers more regression topics as a next read.
I found this book since it was recommended by some Data scientists in my company.
I have worked on this book cover to cover, and find the material, immensely useful. This is probably among the best books that I have read!!!
About the book:
1. Very approachable, structured learning
2. Comprehensive with examples, exercises and exercise solutions.
3. Short videos to help you grasp on the core concepts
I am thankful for the authors for providing such a wonderful book. If you are new to statistics, this is THE BOOK.
Besides the above, it cover an intro to statistics but for me (CS background) it's one of the best Intro I have read. Clear, concise, and super helpful.
