I am a huge Lauren Dane fan and was stoked for her new series, Ink & Chrome. Opening Up, the first book in the series, was good but not on par with other books I've read by her in the past.

Asa Barrons is a former military man who is now co-owner in a well respected, custom hot rod and motorcycle shop called Twisted Steele. He's pierced, tattooed, incredibly sexy, has alpha male written all over him, is into kink, isn't afraid to get dirty, and is very good with his hands. Unfortunately for PJ, he doesn't mix business with pleasure.

PJ Coleman is young, smart, pretty, and incredibly talented with custom paint. Problem is, she's a college dropout, tattooed, pierced, and changes her hair color almost weekly. In other words, she's a complete and utter failure in her father's eyes. She wants so much to get his approval and is looking to take her family owned company into the future. Unfortunately, she's getting a lot of resistance from her hateful father and equally misogynistic uncle.

I really liked certain aspects of Opening Up and thought that PJ and Asa worked well together. That said, I had some issues with the book.

(1) I saw the reasoning behind the father's issues with PJ from a mile away. I was hoping to be surprised and I wasn't, which was a let down.

(2) Lies by omission are still lies and Asa pissed me off on more than one occasion. He forgot or didn't think something was important enough to share (even though his friends encouraged him to do so), so he just kept it to himself. That personally doesn't work for me in any way, shape, or form. I'm a brutally honest person and my need for honesty extends to the fictional worlds I inhabit. I feel for these characters and Asa angered me.

Good, because PJ is a very strong heroine who doesn't hesitate to tell Asa exactly how she wanted to be treated, and she didn't just give in to his desire for anal sex, either. Also good: I'm tired of books in which an angry or depressed parent suddenly sees the light, and begs forgiveness, so PJ's dad remaining estranged and bitter definitely worked for me (sorry, PJ!). I also do believe that some misogyny exists in the racing world, especially for a 25-year-old with a great body, so I didn't mind that, either. I must be part cavewoman, because I cheered when Asa confessed he had knocked that one guy around a little for insulting PJ.

Bad, because even though Asa respected PJ's lack of interest in anal sex, he didn't change the condom?! That's not only disgusting, but unsanitary and unhealthy as well. Yuck! The sex scenes became rather repetitive, and where was PJ's safe word? Maybe this wasn't supposed to be formal BDSM play, but there still need to be limits. Also, Asa's family was as perfect as PJ's family was dysfunctional, and I have trouble with the idea that a someone who gave birth at15 wouldn't have felt some resentment and anger towards her son even though she worked so hard to get him back from his father's family.

Not good or bad, but so-so: I don't care enough about these characters and this series to see what happens to anyone else, unfortunately. I was able to put this book and down and pick it up again a little later, so it obviously wasn't riveting enough to hold my interest. Sorry, but this book is more of a miss than a hit for me.

In Lauren Dane's erotic romance OPENING UP (Ink and Chrome #1), the chemistry between the hero and heroine, Asa and PJ, is explosive... literally, as in one filthy, graphic, sex scene near the end of the novel. PJ likes filth, and obviously, so does Asa. They're meant to be together because that's their thing, though PJ isn't hesitant in saying no to the sex games she doesn't feel comfortable with. PJ doesn't take s*** from anyone. She stands up for herself in a male-dominated world, but she's also attracted to powerful men. As PJ states in the opening scene, Asa is one bad ass alpha male. Meanwhile, Asa perceives PJ as the bombshell, girl next door, every heterosexual man's wet dream.

PJ Colman is one of four siblings who manage Colman Industries, their grandfather's legacy, a kind of auto parts company that specializes in high-end clients and the car racing scene. She's the black sheep of the family, who dropped out of college, dates bad boys, and doesn't conform to her father's expectations of what an executive businesswoman should look like. She's got piercings and tattoos, and dyes her hair whatever color suits her mood. She's tough and smart, and has innovative ideas about how the company can move forward and be even more profitable. However, because she's a woman, and a pretty one at that, she's not taken seriously by her father and uncle who head the company and by most other men in the industry. PJ's talent is in custom paint, detailing cars and motorcycles, while Asa co-owns Twisted Steel, an auto body shop that fixes up and restores those classic American muscle cars. PJ's appreciation of muscle cars and bikes turns Asa on, especially when he sees her posing with said vehicles in a photo shoot for a calendar advertising local businesses.
