It has its roots at RoyalRoadL yet it has greatly expanded and differentiated since, due to massive amounts of editing.
It's great in the way the author drags you into the story, making you painfully watch the idocy that is the protagonist as he struggles in his upstart days and all the mistakes he makes. It truly drags you in, like you are a part of the story, experiencing it the same way the protagonist is.
The writing is smooth and easily followed, the setting is amazing, and the reasoning is even better and used in various degrees which is what is mostly lacking in other LitRPG stories.
If I had to compare it to a story, it would with out a doubt be Universe Online in the way that the writing is fabulous, detailed but not too detailed, still leaving things in the dark for the quiet observer to discover or to be later found out by plot. It's a moving work that I can't help but give 5 stars for!
All in all I can say that this work is something to look forward to, and dive headfirst into!
can't wait for book 2!
In this story, extremely advanced aliens invade Earth. They have eliminated war in the real universe. Instead, all sentient life is brought into a virtual game where decisions are fought out. Whatever entity controls planetary "control points" in the game (such as Earth's), can dictated laws and decisions in the real universe as well. Newly discovered Earth has three years until its immunity runs out!
Connecting to the game is extra-ordinarily expensive (the equivalent of millions of dollars), as it requires the use of alien technology. The main character has the good fortune to be invited to be a "Player" in the game, one of the representatives of humanity. He must make wise decisions without understanding all the repercussions of his actions, all while trying to pay of a huge personal debt (that he got in order to connect to the game).
Written mostly from a first-person POV, the novel is a fantastical Sci-Fi adventure of a young man taken from ordinary life and given the opportunity to join "The Game," a universal virtual-reality with real-world implications.
Join Alan, a Machine Lord Rogue, assisted by his omnipresent AI, Eve, as they wholeheartedly trudge forward into the unknown. They will face terrorist attacks, practically omnipotent figures, and the many consequences that arise from their actions. Every step they take will unleash new possibilities, new choices, and new insight to the reality around them.
This was and is a web-novel and has been critiqued by many readers throughout its development. This is just the first book in what has great potential in being a Sci-Fi classic; the kind of book that sets the tone for following novels to come for many years. The ideas may be considered cliche but are incorporated such that the novel is now more that the sum of its parts.
I really like this book. Unfortunately, I feel this book series may end up like the sequels to a different novel, Princes of the Earth (written by Michael Kurland): unfinished. However, I await with bated breath for either's sequel should they ever come. Small shout-out to the author: "You'd like the previously mentioned novel. It isn't VR but it matches your style and has some interesting ideas that would fit well in your books."
A few spelling and grammatical errors, but otherwise job well done as far as editing is concerned.
The world (more aptly defined as universes) is well defined, and its MMORPG gaming roots are clearly established.
A fine addition to the genre and the first salvo in an intergalactic war. I eagerly anticipate reading the second book in the series, and expect more to come from this debut author (looking at you, Cosimo).
