A nonfiction book that frequently reads like an adventure novel, this account of the author’s intelligence operations in post-9/11 Afghanistan should definitely strike a chord with readers. Shaffer was an intelligence operative from an early age, joining army counterintelligence in the early 1980s at the age of 19. By 1991, he was running HUMINT, the army’s clandestine human-intelligence program. Prior to 2001, he was working on an operation called Able Danger, which, according Shaffer, uncovered some of the 9/11 terrorists a full year before the attacks, although—again, according to Shaffer—the government blocked attempts to act upon the information. He saw the same sort of thing happen again in Afghanistan, when red tape and inept policies hindered efforts to fight the Taliban. This is almost two books in one: a rousing chronicle of the author’s experiences on foreign soil and an examination of a bloated bureaucracy that is in desperate need of retooling. Shaffer adopts a mostly objective tone, although there are moments when his personal views sneak through (the phrase “Bush administration lunacy,” for example). Although no coauthor is listed, the book reads like it was transcribed from taped interviews (see the occasional oddly constructed paragraph where it looks like someone stuck in parenthetical explanations of things the author was saying). All in all, a fascinating, eye-opening book. --David Pitt
“Anthony Shaffer has written a gripping account, filled with amazing detail, of an otherwise secret world. Shaffer has the instincts of a thriller writer and the knowledge and perspective of the professional insider. Operation Dark Heart is a fascinating page-turner.”
-- Doug Stanton, author of Horse Soldiers
“A fascinating look into the highly complex world of modern combat, clandestine intelligence and bureaucrats run amok. Tony Shaffer walks and runs us through a critical time in the history in the war in Afghanistan. From the opening to the closing, you are on the edge of your seat. Tony is, in all aspects, the real Jack Bauer - but with an intellect.”
--Dr. Christopher M. Lehman, former Special Assistant to President Reagan, National Security Counsel

While I did not serve in Afghanistan, I Did work with intelligence, and I can easily relate to the things he describes. His style of writing makes for easy reading., I.
gather some important legit information, from people that don't care much for Americans. What he found out was
astounding, and was a mirror image about what would became 9-11. He knew of the sleeper cells, names and locations
who was financing the operations in the U.S., everything-but nobody was listening. Were they naive or did they have
some special agenda, who can say. But we experienced a "Pearl Harbor" and regardless it was negligent and criminal.
When hearing were held a lot of people knew of Shaffer's intelligence report, but it was kept out of the hearing, and
away from the American people. He was ordered not to say anything, his security clearance pulled, and everything taken
from his office.
Then he writes a book, and the Pentagon buys every copy but a few pre-publication books that got out. Reminds me of the
Nazis burning books that were unacceptable. Fascism died in Germany with the end of WW-2, but took root and grew
and now is enmeshed in every thing that happens in this country. I guess he has not tried a second [uncensored]
publication here because no printer will do it. (I wonder what else has been kept from us in the land of the Free?)
Now that we know that every email is recorded and phone call as well, be a good time to go back to snail mail.
If they believe there are terrorists among us they should look in the mirror-they keep letting them enter.
(Odd; wasn't Afghani's that pulled off 9-11, it was Saudi's; wasn't Al-qaeda in Afghanistan that led the attack, it was Al-qaeda
in NY. Afghanistan has no air force or navy, but we declare war and attack because of one man-it would have made more
sense to sent in some A-Teams to work with some locals instead of turning bin Laden into a God. We kill Moammar Gadhafi who has been successfully fighting the Muslim Brotherhood, and now Libya is the biggest threat of terrorism in the Middle East-but I digress.)
