Operation Nordwind is one of the lesser known campaigns of World War II (1939-1945), yet one of the more intriguing. Largely overshadowed by the Battle of the Bulge further north, Nordwind was the last great operation by the Waffen-SS Panzer divisions in the west, and the last time the Wehrmacht was on the offensive in the West. The campaign also highlights the difficulties of inter-Allied cooperation between the Americans and the French. This campaign has been extensively treated in German and French accounts, but is not well covered in English.

About the Author

Steven J. Zaloga received his BA in history from Union College and his MA from Columbia University. He has worked as an analyst in the aerospace industry for over two decades, covering missile systems and the international arms trade, and has served with the Institute for Defense Analyses, a federal think-tank. He is the author of numerous books on military technology and military history, with an accent on the US Army in World War II as well as Russia and the former Soviet Union. Good account of a surprisingly obscure campaign

Steven Zaloga is by far the most consistent of Osprey's stable of writers, and this is one of his better works. The book provides a good summary of this rather under-remembered campaign, and is backed by the usual range of high quality maps, photos and other graphics which are included in works in this series. Impressively for a book of this length and style, it's also highly multi-national, with the French and German sides of the story receiving considerable coverage - as a result it probably includes one of the best mass market accounts of the French Army of this period.

Operation Nordwind is weighted towards providing an analysis of why the German offensives failed rather than a narrative of the campaign. Zaloga's analysis of the comparative strengths and weaknesses of the Allied and German forces is detailed and highly convincing, and make it clear why the campaign ended the way it did. However, it's less clear why the offensives were even launched in the first place: presumably the Germans lacked good intelligence of the strength of the Allied forces and were hindered by poor senior Army leadership which failed to convince Hitler that the attacks had no chance of success, but this is never explicitly set out.

The U.S 14th and 12th Armored Division had the most Battle Casualties of all U.S Armored Division that entered combat in November 1944 and December 1944 by the end of the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign or "Battle of the Bulge" on January 25, 1945!
The U.S 12th and 14th Armored Divisions had even more Battle Casualties than the U.S 9th, 10th and 11th Armored Divisions had from November 1944 to the end of the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign on January 25, 1945 and they served in the U.S 7th Army in the nightmarish and terrifying Battles in the Siegfried Line in December 1944 and in defense of the Upper Rhine River in Northeastern France known as Northern Alsace during the German 15 Division Counteroffensive codenamed "Operation Nordwind" but few Historians realize this!
The "Battles of Hatten and Rittershoffen and Gambsheim and Herrlisheim" were far larger and bloodier than Historians realize.
'Operation Nordwind' was the 2nd Largest German Counteroffensive to ever hit the U.S Army in the MTO or ETO from 1942 to 1945. It was much larger that the German Counteroffensives at Kasserine Pass in Tunisia; Anzio, Italy; Mortain, and Arracourt, France but was overshadowed by the even larger German Counteroffensive of 28 Divisions in the Ardennes which was fought off by 29 U.S Divisions whereas there were only 8 Divisions and 3 Division size "Task Forces" available to the U.S 7th Army to fight off the large reinforced German 1st Army with the XIII SS, XC, LXXXIX and XXXIX Panzer Corps and Army Group Oberrhein XIV SS Corps which included 4 re-equipped German Panzer and Panzer Grenadier Divisions, 1 SS Mountain Division and 1 Parachute Division and 9 Infantry Divisions to drive and destroy the U.S 7th Army and especially to drive or encircle the U.S VI Corps off it's Upper Rhine River Positions north of Strasbourg where the German High Command had been expecting a Rhine River Crossing since late November 1944 when General Eisenhower made his "admittedly imbecilic decision to not put the U.S 6th Army Group's 7th Army across the Rhine River at Rastatt in an attack North to Karlruhe and Mannheim.
It would be 3 1/2 Months later and 100's of Thousand of Battle Casualties before the U.S 9th Armored Division finally crossed the Rhine River at Remagen in March of 1945.

Just as "everybody" knows about the D-Day invasion of France at Normandy in June of 1944, but fewer people know about the invasion of Southern France in August--"everybody" knows about the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes in December 1944, but far fewer people know about Hitler's "Second Punch" just to the south into Alsace in January. This excellent little book covers that subject. I have a particular interest in it because my Dad flew P-47 Thunderbolts in support of the U.S. ground troops in Alsace, so this is part of his personal story. I like this book because it is concise, has excellent maps, and offers some beautiful graphics to highlight the story. If you really like this little-known dimension of the war, you might want to hunt for a copy of "Winter Storm" by Lise Pommois to complement it.

Largely Unknown Campaign

When I was ten and began building models of tanks from WW2, I wished I could afford an Osprey book based on the vehicle or the battles it fought. The illustrated publisher's quick histories, full-color artwork plates, maps and photographs are unique and entertaining. They, more often than not, provide a great entry point to a particular piece of history (though sometimes the authors have more passion than expertise).

The book covers an attempt by German forces to capitalize on the disruption caused by the Ardennes offensive. This campaign in the Alsace region was quite bloody and featured some of the more intense tank battles on the Western front. The need for cooperation between US and Free French Forces is well communicated and I gained new respect both for Lieutenant-General Devers and General de Tassigny though it was inevitable that the German forces would be overwhelmed. What made the greatest impression is the poor strategic choices made again by Hitler and the superlative attempts by field commanders to make the most of their limited tactical successes.

This book had an updated layout that made Osprey seem a little more contemporary, however, I do worry about Osprey's format overall. They are pricey publications for their length and they need to rethink their offer in this digital world or may lose relevance.
