I only made it halfway and gave up. I will never read this author again. Ugh.
A word of caution, first. This story does not avoid the dark difficult aspects of true villians. If you are fragile or need stories that don't get too gritty or real, then this book is probably not for you.
The tactical and operational aspects of a team of "operators" seemed real to me. Overall, the sense of team between the Security Team members and between the h and H was conveyed well. I liked this. The h and H were people I could root for and understand. I liked that the hero (H) was decisive and strong in his commitments.
For me, the mental/emotional connection is more important than the physical connection. So many authors in this genre give that part of a relationship short shrift, but not here. This author gives details to the foundational commitment between our h and H that are usually left to the imagination (while leaving details of sexual coming together more to the imagination). The love and caring of all characters came together for a very satisfying conclusion.
I like how the author goes into how the mind and muscles respond to a crisis and the post stress process and therapy benefits. This was very true for the hero and heroine in the story. They find love in the midst of her surviving a terrorist attack.
No spoilers but this is a very realistic story without being overly graphic about the violence.
Contains 18+ sexy scenes
I suffer from PTSD from childhood and college rape incidents. The discussion of therapy in the book I actually found helpful. I know I need to continue to check in with a therapist on an ongoing basis. I thank the author for including that fact as a realistic expectation. Even intelligent, well trained military dark ops experts need therapy for the unexpected components of PTSD.
The system in the USA is certainly not flawless, but these characters know automatically who is a bad guy and have the power to perform extra-judicial executions. Even with the court system now extant in the USA, the country has never imprisoned or executed an innocent person, right?
I know this is fantasy, but I think we have to be careful not to approve, glorify, condone, actions like these even in novels. The Rule of Law is often hard to obey, and the guilty sometimes escape just punishment, but it's better than any other system.
And I, too, have served in the US Navy (electronics officer) for 10 years. It's sad to see what I - and my husband and sons in the US Navy - fought for disregarded like this. Authors, please consider the effects your words can have on your readers.
The use of psychological works, of course is a book to read and move on so don't expect a thesis.
Angel & Jackson was prime part, mix Shepherd and the rest and you had an interesting plot.
Like characters and story. An author to remember
