The suspense lies in discovering if his "lover" who is a Syrian spy will be faithful to her country or to Vaux and whether another country's agents will interfere with the enterprise.
The book has some inconsistencies and gets bogged down in the weeds at times, and I thought the storyline could be tighter and easier to follow. I had not read the prequel to this book, so did not have prior knowledge of relationships that might have helped. The topic is interesting, especially in light of current events. Something this book includes that most spy novels don't is some of the day-to-day mundaneness of intelligence work. That contributes to the realism of the book and humanness of the characters. In other words, they are not all Jason Bourne-like super spies.
