Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Highly practical in focus, this volume proceeds from broad discussions of operations strategy, to assessments of specific strategies (competing on quality, productivity, and new products and processes), to discussions of how those strategies can best be implemented over time.

I'm afraid I couldn't disagree more with Mr. Villanueva. The lessons here are timeless, and in addition provide historical context for thinking about several major issues that have been themes in manufacturing and operations management for the past 30 years (e.g. quality, competing with better operations, diagnosis of operating problems). The HBR article by Garvin "Quality On the Line" is a wonderful piece of research. The case on Corning's Z-glass is a gem, in the classic mode of HBS cases. Good stuff.

The main reason I don't give it the top rating is the complete absence of anything relating to the experience curve and the microeconomics of strategic business units, which are the heart of operations cost.

-- Roy Zider

(note -- I purchased the hard cover edition -- this review is in the paperback section -- I assume they are the same book).

books in great condition, I already knew the content of the book because I used it for my college independent study. It has a lot of great information on how companies and factories can and should be ran.

I read this book long after its purchasing. Its text stuff is short (just a couple of papers from HBS) and a couple of ideas about the prospective role of production as part of the strategy function of any company and quality control management. All of it is very outdated. In adition, cases are not liable for selfstudy. So, Little profit is to be got from this book from selfstudy.
