4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Dragon Award winner Brian Niemeier’s groundbreaking Soul Cycle reaches its startling conclusion in The Ophian Rising, the highly anticipated sequel to The Secret Kings. The Zadokim healed the cosmos from the ravages of the Cataclysm, and the survivors made them kings. Now the Ophians, a ruthless insurgent movement, wage a vicious uprising against their immortal rulers’ two hundred year reign. Xander and Astlin have transformed the desert world of Tharis into the hub of a flourishing trade empire. Their Nesshin subjects spread a new faith promising true freedom in another universe. But when Astlin seeks forbidden knowledge to resurrect her long-dead family, sinister forces exact a terrible price from those she loves. With the Ophian threat engulfing the spheres and a primeval terror rising from its prison, Astlin must turn to a shiftless gambler, the outlaw squire of a fallen knight, and a mismatched pair of smugglers to escape the ghosts of her past and save all souls from eternal death. But can mortals succeed where even gods have failed?

I'm at a bit of a loss to explain this book without spoiling the others. It's not so much because it's the last book in a series and that it is unavoidable but because this story could standalone without them. However, I have read the other three so I will keep it brief.

There is a place much like Hell where the dead are trapped in endless torment. However, it is not like the cartoonish fire and brimstone Hell you see in old Bugs Bunny shorts or in equally silly online arguments with atheists but one where the world is much like ours with a fantasy and science fiction bent. "Magic" exists in so much that manipulation of the natural world is possible via different methods and systems that are, mercifully, not explained in detail. More than that death and rebirth is a prison where souls remained trapped in this hell world and demonic beings roam free to rule over and torment the masses. This is where the Soul Cycle series takes place.

Through the events of the last three books it has been learned that this world is not the real Hell and these demons playing gods are power hungry monsters looking to rule over this chaos for their own gain. It is an endless cycle of death and despair. But there is a bit of hope. There is escape from this hell, a crack in the abyss that points to something a fair bit different than the world the main characters know. By the end of the third book the good guys have finally discovered this and decide to share it with those trapped in the endless cycle. That is where we were left off. In this final entry many years have passed but it looks as things haven't changed all that much.

    Or have they?

In many ways this book is an epilogue to the first three as the third entry wrapped up a lot of character arcs. This one closes off the final few and adds a couple more to be sure. However, it does confirm a theory I had about the universe since the first book in regards to what this place really is and lets you know why it has been such a struggle to turn the hell around. By the end of the story the pieces come together and it leaves you with the feeling that Good will eventually win over the Evil this place is infected with. It will not be easy, but it will happen. Considering how much carnage and destruction these books have this says a lot that such a positive takeaway can be gathered from only a single plot turn..

And of course, being that this is an action adventure story I am happy to report the author has them both in spades here. Even though we have seen this universe four times now I never get sick of exploding buildings, demonic pits, eerie magic, exotic monsters, and trippy spacecrafts. Every event is punctuated with an action set piece that would leave Chuck Norris giving a solemn nod, and the story moves briskly from intrigue and reveal to yet another escalation in stakes without breaking a sweat. Of all four books this one has the best flow.

One thing the author should be praised with doing is going in the opposite direction of epic fantasy and science fiction writers when it comes to the length. Each book in the Soul Cycle is sharper and quicker than the last with this entry being the shortest and sharpest. Rowling would have learned well from this series.

But the key to the success of this series is the wonder. Niemeier doesn't explain everything. He doesn't tie everything up in a neat bow. The story ends when the threat has been defeated and the main character arc has ended. There are questions that haven't been answered and there are events that still must play out. Not everything is shoveled out, but the story has still ended.

    This is a good thing.

This is what brings the Soul Cycle from being just another fantasy series that explains everything for my feeble brain so I can forget all about it five minutes after reading to being an adventure that keeps me thinking about possibilities and events that might play out after the last page has been turned. It sticks because it leaves you with questions about the world you will want to figure out for yourself.

It's a feeling a try to get across in my stories, and Niemeier has done it here and made it look so very easy. As a writer I admire what he has done here, but as a reader I am even more pleased.

This usage of wonder has successfully made the Soul Cycle one of the best series I've read in recent memory. If you haven't jumped in by now then what are you waiting for? Get going! You won't read anything else like it today.

The 4th and final book of Brian Niemeier‘s Soul Cycle, The Ophian Rising is I think the best of the four books – and that’s no small complement, as each book is in its own way very good to excellent. Short & sweet: if you’re a fan of mind-bending fiction, and epic tales spun out over centuries, of heroic heroes you can love and disturbingly inventive and evil monsters, then check out this book and the whole Soul Cycle series. And buckle in for the ride.

The Ophian Rising (Soul Cycle Book 4) by [Niemeier, Brian]Throughout the series, a continuing theme is how truth and reality are not obvious to us, the readers, or to the characters in the story. The greatest heroes in this fourth book, Navkin and Astlin, are two women who at first do not even understand their own origins, eventually end up queens and builders of society, and finally are willing to die and surrender what they thought they were in order to banish evil from their worlds. Even that is not exactly what’s going on – but any more would risk spoilage.

The ending is a very cool and surprising twist. I will say that I long suspected some amazing reveal at the end. Hints are dropped. As mentioned in reviews of the earlier books in the series, Niemeier is not world building, but universe building. What I mean: world building takes place in this universe – the worlds thus built, however wild, are posited to exist, somehow, with us here. From very early in the Soul Cycle, it’s clear Niemeier’s universe of prana, the Cardinal Spheres, the Strata, substantial ether and techno-spiritual magic is not in this universe in any material sense. So the questions lurks: where is *our* universe in this story? Are we in this story simply in some other place entirely, where the elves are Gen and the magic is Factoring and warp drive is ether-running? But otherwise unrecognizable as home? Or is there a deeper home?

After an exhausting Sunday following an even more exhausting work week, I collapsed on my bed around 9:00 with the last 20% of the book to read. Fell asleep and woke at 11:00 – and didn’t get back to sleep until after midnight. Then, immediately upon finishing the book, reread the author’s glossary and cast of characters, because I know I missed 75% of what was going on. Then considered rereading Nethereal, the first book in the series, to see what I missed. That’s a pretty good book that makes you care enough to want to make sure you didn’t miss too much.

Because there is a lot there. Some of it is merely mechanical – dozens of characters and worlds and cities and ships and circles of Hell to keep straight. Some of it is the kind of convoluted plotting one should expect over a 4-book series. But there’s also a lot going on in the realm of ideas – right and wrong, true and false, loyalty and treachery, which are loved or rejected for about every flavor of reason one can imagine. The reader must keep it all straight or, alas!, some key action by some secondary character will cause a ‘what?!?’ moment – that then makes sense once you parse out where we last left things with that character.

But it’s worth it. Excellent read.

I read somewhere that this series had been percolating in the author’s mind for a decade or so. It does have a bit of a ‘everything & the kitchen sink’ feel to it, sometimes. I’ve found Niemeier’s shorter works, such as The Hymn of the Pearl and Elegy for the Locust from Forbidden Thought to be easier to get my brain around and so more immediately satisfying. That said, these are the first 4 novels Niemeier has written – I can only imagine with happy anticipation what the next novels will be like, given the quality already present and improvement evident over the 4 books. Bring it on!

Disclosure: I received an eARC to review. I have since purchased the book.

The Secret Kings might have wrapped up the rise and fall of the Void God Shaiel, but the spheres of the Soul Cycle is one still living on borrowed time. Zadok has delayed his final judgement by two centuries, but for how much longer?

As usual, this trip through the Soul Cycle reveals more a of a strange and haunting universe, with a setting that rewards deeper investigation. And the clues and hints are so subtle and layered that rereadings are rewarded. But don't worry that Brian Niemeier has succumbed to worldbuilder's disease. With each new book, the story flies faster and wilder through the shattered worlds of the Soul Cycle. But none of the Soul Cycle books are meant to be skimmed, doubly so with The Ophian Rising.

Seeing the mysteries of story and setting unfold in The Ophian Rising is riveting, but the heart of this story is Astlin. She may have been redeemed from the torment of being the Fire Souldancer, but she has to deal with her faults, even as she tries to do good. Unfortunately, she also has to navigate a web of intrigue as Zadok, the Ophians, and others turn against her. The result is genrebending fun, although with the steep learning curve of epic fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ending worthy of a superlative series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2017
Wow, this book is good! Having loved the three previous Soul Cycle novels (he said with masterful understatement), it was always likely that I’d enjoy this one too—and also be a bit disappointed, because now the series is over. But if the story has to end, this is exactly the ending it deserves, and I came away from it satisfied.

Loose ends are skilfully woven in to the fabric of what must be one of sci-fi’s most inventive and fully imagined universes. We get proper, consistent answers to the mysteries that lurk around the edges of the previous instalments. We get to see what happened to characters we grew to love—or loathe!—as we went along. And we have antagonists that invoke a genuine sense of dread and peril, so that when our heroes stand against them the outcome matters.

If you like your science fiction to acknowledge that there is good and there is evil, your protagonists potent but flawed, your tech sufficiently advanced to feel like magic, your magic sufficiently consistent to feel like technology, your stakes high, and your pathos genuine, you will love this book—this whole series—as I did.

Disclosure: I received a free advance reader copy of the book so that I could write an honest review. I then bought a copy from Amazon UK as a thank-you to the author because it really is that good.

If you miss out on the Soul Cycle you are missing out on something you simply won’t get elsewhere. Some stories you might pick one or another by preference and not really miss much.... this one you either read or you miss out on entirely, because nothing is really LIKE it.

I was afraid to start this book. I finally did. I couldn’t put it down again until I was done. It’s magnificent, strange, ominous, and hopeful. It’s a massive, cataclysmic conclusion and at the same time the most powerful parts of it are happening in the hearts and destinies of the characters.

There’s shocking violence, world-cracking magic, horror beyond sanity, and a deep, tragic philosophical arc that still manages to flare into unbreakable hope. There are many good books out there, but this one is great. Great, and frighteningly strange, and at the same time crystal clear in its vision. READ IT.

This was a fitting ending to a truly unique series. Don't start with this book as the storyline is complex and without reading the previous books confusing. Demigods, mortals and evil. It's a tale of hope and redemption. Plenty of action and adventure.
