- Opinel's carbon steel is extremely hard, thereby guaranteeing excellent cutting quality, good wear resistance and easy regrinding. Carbon can corrode easily. It is advised that you avoid damp locations and wipe and grease the blade after use. Each blade is stamped with the "Crowned Hand" mark. In 1909, Joseph Opinel chose the Crowned Hand emblem for his knives as a symbol to represent the origin and quality of Opinel knives.
- Beech is the most commonly used wood for the manufacture of Opinel handles. Beech is hard, durable and easy to work with. With a homogeneous appearance, its light color varies from yellow to pink. It is characterized by the presence of numerous small, dark dashes. To prevent a negative impact on the environment (pollution from transport, deforestation ...), 95% of the wood for handles comes from sustainably managed French forests.
- Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives as of the No 06. Cut out of stainless steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding. In addition to locking the blade open (safety in use), it is now possible to lock the blade closed (safety in transport)

- Hand-wash or wipe clean your blade after each use
- Wipe the blade dry
- Store in a dry place and keep out of damp conditions
- Expect the wooden handle to swell or contract slightly with use; wood is a living material that can be affected by humidity and atmospheric conditions.
- If your blade feels stuck, use the “Opinel knock” — rapping the end of the knife on a hard surface — to loosen the blade slightly
- Grease the metal parts, including the Virobloc locking mechanism, on a regular basis
- Use a whetstone or other fine-grain natural stone to sharpen your blade. Make sure the blade is dry and clean, and hold the sharpening stone at an approximately 20-degree angle from the blade while sharpening

- Leave corrosive materials (like acidic foods) on your blade for extended periods of time
- Use bleach or chlorine to clean your knife
- Leave your knife in wet or damp conditions

It is impossible to exaggerate the qualities of this blade. It is insulting to say it is good "for the price," if it were $100 or more I would still say it was a great knife (although I would have just longed for it, and not purchased it). I say that in all honesty. I have a modest collection, just a few knives that I have selected to actually use daily and camping. These include a high end Strider (wonderful knife, but I work in an office and I am concerned about making people nervous), some buck knives, a MoraKniv (another just crazy nice inexpensive knife, but again not for the office), and some cheaper knives (including a Gerber that is a huge disappointment). I just mention these to qualify my opinion of this particular blade. I love it. A lot. It has been my every day carry in my slacks and jeans for a while now and I have plenty of opportunities to assess it. It's a beautiful knife, when it's closed is elegant and does not look like a weirdo tactical knife, just like a french piece of art so nobody gets nervous. Open, it is still such a classic look that the only comments I get about it, even from people who don't carry, is that it's a good looking knife. Carries nice in the pocket, which I was concerned about, I usually have pocket clips on my knives.
Casual, Dress, Bushcraft, Kitchen, EDC, fishing, basically whatever you would need a blade for this guy should have you covered (haven't tried field dressing anything, I imagine it would work fine but get super grody). No doubt there are obviously better knives out there for specific situations like self defense, wood processing (I would not use this for batoning through a log), hunting, or whatever but for a terrific pocket knife to always have on you, you would be hard pressed to find its equal.
In contrast, this knife is all about comfort and utility. It's one blade, secured with a rotating collar at its base; this collar will keep the blade open or closed with one quarter-turn (see photos). The 4-inch handle is ergonomic and of sufficient size even for my giant hands. The design isn't trying in the least to be sexy, but its sturdiness and simplicity still make it a true thing of beauty.
I've read that carbon steel blades can rust quickly if not cared for. The best solution I've found online thus far: 1) wipe blade with a clean, dry cloth after each use to prevent oxidation (your shirt will do in a pinch); 2) regularly grease blade by rubbing in a couple drops of 3-in-1 oil; 3) keep the folding joint of your blade lubricated with a little Remington Dri-Lube aerosol spray, and regularly remove lint and other small debris that can gum up the works.
Perform these few simple tasks, and apparently Opinels have the longevity to be passed down in families across generations. This knife is one of the cheapest and most useful heirlooms money can buy.
