Opinel Safety Ring (Virobloc)
Kaviso Outdoors
Product Description
THE FAVORITE TOOL OF MUSHROOM PICKERS
The ideal tool for picking morels, ceps, chanterelles, trumpets, rosés meadows, coulemelles, boletes ... etc. The 8cm blade is curved to facilitate cutting. Its dentate back helps to scrape and clean the mushroom. The natural bristle brush behind the beech handle is ideal for dusting the picking and removing the soil easily.
THE RIGHT FEATURES AT THE RIGHT COST
Opinel uses Sandvik(R) 12C27 Modified stainless steel. The Swedish steel is well known for its anti-corrosive properties which requires minimal upkeep. Its carbon content of at least 0.40% provides an excellent cutting edge which is also easy to keep sharp.
The patented VIROBLOC locking mechanism keeps your knife safely closed in your pocket and locks the blade open during use. The simplicity of the knife’s design and it’s sustainable wooden handle makes the knife lightweight too!
THE PERFECT SIZE FOR EVERYDAY CARRY
Both smart and simple, the Opinel folding knife is composed of 5 elements: the blade, the wooden handle, the fixed ferrule, the rivet and the rotating VIROBLOC locking ring which was added in 1955 to sizes No.06 and above.
The No.08 is the most widely distributed size in the ever-growing line of Opinel folding knives, earning its reputation as an everyday carry staple. The knife is equipped with a 3.14 inch blade, open length 7.25 inches.
CARING FOR YOUR KNIFE
All Opinel wooden-handle knives are not designed to be washed in the dishwasher. Heat and moisture will cause any wood to swell which will make the knife hard to open at times. Opinel suggests carefully hand-washing your knives and leaving them out to air dry. The Sandvik 12C27 Mod. Stainless Steel used for the blades is low maintenance, meaning it is highly resistant to rust and can be polished or cared for with simple organic oils.
MADE IN THE FRENCH ALPS FOR OVER 130 YEARS
Joseph Opinel designed his first pocket knife in 1890, creating a tool that is as robust and functional as it is simple and beautiful. From his workshop at the foot of the French Alps, Opinel forged a cult classic. Generations of artists, explorers, and farmers have carried the instantly recognizable, imminently useful Opinel knife in their pockets.
Little has changed since 1890. Rooted in history and a commitment to craftsmanship, the Opinel family still makes their knives in the Savoie region of France. Each year, THEIR team of 150 employees in France manufactures over 5 million knives, ranging from outdoor tools to kitchen knives, all to honor Joseph Opinel’s focus on quality and simplicity.

I have cut myself once, but this was user error my first time out, not knowing how incredibly fast this blade would pass through a mushroom. It healed without a scar (I think because of how sharp this bad boy is!).
The locking mechanism has taken a bit to get used to, and it has gotten easier to lock over time. When I first got the knife, it was not an easy lock.
In short, I grow to love this knife more and more and look forward to using it more in the years to come!
Edit: I’ve added my photo showing the knife after daily pocket carrying. You can see there is tons of life in the boat hair still!
the blade steel is known to me, its eh. But for the money absolutely UNBEATABLE. this steel and a fine round diamond file in your pocket could be used endlessly. It's very easy to sharpen, if you can be consistent. oh and it'll never rust. so you cow patty fans will love it.
bought it as a gift. wrapped it in brown paper, the reaction i saw was priceless. the box this comes in is enough of a gift box and the quality of the handle is great, grain looks decent and blade fits square. aspiring hunters only need this and a mesh bag to mushroom hunt in a ecologically polite way.
