So, far I am incredibly happy, this gets around the problem of a broken internal fan for my laptop and I hope to get many more years of use out of it. If this ever wears out I will definitely buy another!
right now it's averaging 50 degrees centigrade cooler that the hottest it got yesterday before i attached the cooler. all four cores are running below 50 C. it's an amazing difference.
the most important thing you can do it make SURE that the shroud is airtight against the laptop vent. of course, i just got it so durability is unknown. if it breaks down i'll amend my review.
I'm happy to say that it actually works as expected. When running a separate temperature monitoring program for reference, I can see the CPU internal temperature drop by as much as 20 degrees Fahrenheit, sometimes more. Keep in mind that this is the internal temperature of the component itself, which won't be the same as the air temperature coming out of the vents. Even so, the results are amazing.
Here's why it loses a star. This thing can be attached to any air vent on your laptop, BUT, attaching it to the rear vent can put a limit on how much you can tilt the screen back, especially if you have a one inch thick laptop like mine. You can see what I mean in the attached picture. This isn't a deal breaker for me because I use an external monitor at home anyway. And, considering how well this unit works, I'm willing to live with this limitation when I'm traveling. I can still tilt the screen back just enough.
One other problem I had - and Opolar may have already fixed this - is that I was unable to switch between temperature units. It's stuck on Fahrenheit with no way to change it to Celsius. I contacted the company about this on May of 2016, and I was told that the engineers were rewriting the program to incorporate dual temperature modes. I'm hoping that they might release a firmware update for those of us who already own it. It's a little annoying, but I can live with it because this unit works so well.
If I were to do it over again, I would have bought the LC05, which doesn't have a temperature display, and then used a separate temperature monitoring program, which you can easily find on the internet for free.
As far as function of the fan cooler, I believe it works very well and it's a shame it won't work with my laptop. I jury-rigged the fan against the CPU vent of my laptop to see how it functioned, and as long as I could keep it tight against the vent (which wasn't easy), the fan did work quite well and kept the CPU temperature 7-10 deg cooler under load. For those with side vents that don't have interference on the bottom from perm feet, I think the fan would work well.
