Editorial Reviews

Review

  • "Unique, emotional, heartbreaking and romantic. From the very beginning, you will fall for these deeply flawed characters, and will root for them despite everything they do. The Opportunist is a story that will climb inside your mind and stay with you long after the final page." (S.C. Stephens, author of Thoughtless)
  • "A riveting story of love and betrayal, with a twist. The Opportunist is an emotional journey that proves ones ability to love someone requires the ability to love themselves first. And that self acceptance almost always comes with a price. The end result is a highly moving and rewarding read." -Dina Silver, author of One Pink Line

You are going to want to read this one over and over again! Seriously, when I was finished I was like WTH just happened? T he book will leave you wanting more and I cannot remember a book that I became so emotionally invested in the characters as this one. This book grabbed me page one and even though I am finished, I cannot stop thinking about Caleb and Olivia's decade of love and turmoil. Just when I thought I knew what would happen next, the story took another tug at my heart strings turn. The characters in the book are not the manipulators, it is Tarryn Fisher the author that is. Well done Miss Fisher! I cannot wait for your next book!

I was scared to read this book, honestly, after various reactions I'd read. And so I kept putting off picking it up, even as its hauntingly seductive cover peered up at me enticingly from the table where I'd proudly, if skittishly, placed my copy. Sheesh, the way people talked about the ending, I was afraid that it would put a permanent crack in my soul or something. For the life of me, I don't know why I was so focused on that, rather than everyone pointing out what an awesome read it is. Because this is, truly, madly, deeply, a rich, immersive, unputdownable and wonderful book, one to be savored, not endured, as I had somehow come to fear. This will henceforth be my go-to example of how having preconceptions can hold you back from experiencing something wonderful, because I really expected Olivia, and her story, to be unloveable and reprehensible to the core, beyond the pale of understanding, let alone empathy. And, yeah, not gonna sugarcoat it (sort of silly at this point, right?), she does some kind of stomach-turningly unpalatable, cruel and self-destructive things (not really persuading you to read it yet, am I, sorry! keep reading, please!) But Tarryn's gift is to make these things, and Olivia, emotionally accessible even as they, and she, remain essentially unforgiveable. So, kindof a crap job on the summary and all that, but since there are over 3,000 community reviews, and 59 (!) Friend Reviews, that would be a little redundant anyway. I guess you've gotten the idea, or at least I hope so, that I find the character of Olivia the central and fascinating facet of this story. I love her voice, it's so honest, ironically, as she embarks on her amazing career of lies.Read more ›

Somehow Amazon has not linked the reviews from the Kindle version of this book with the paperback. That is such a shame - because if you look up the Kindle version you'd see the 600+ reviews that give this an average of 4.5 stars. This is why I've come on here to write a review for this book, even though I've already reviewed the Kindle version (you could look up my thoughts there as well).

I read the Kindle version last December, and when I saw the paperback released I HAD to have it for my bookshelf too. I'm a little neurotic like that. I know it's a digital age and my Kindle gives me that immediate gratification I crave to read all the books I find. But yet, at heart, I'm still a traditionalist. I love the feel, the smell, the crisp pages of a book. It was my one true love.

That being said, I only buy those books in both digital and paperback formats when I've fallen in L.O.V.E. with the story and its characters. So that should tell you all you need to know. Tarryn Fisher is an amazing author. Her characters are real, true to form, people. Olivia and Caleb will make you fall in love and then make you want to slap them and shake them out of the games that they're playing with their own hearts.

Be warned, this is the first book of a trilogy. The ending is atypical, but there is a whole other part to the story that needs to be told. The sequel, Dirty Red, has already been released and is equally hypnotizing - but in a completely different way. I bought the sequel in paperback too ;) Now all of us Tarryn Fisher fans are awaiting the final installment. So in summary - buy this book. As long as you're a fan of contemporary romance with a little bit of angst - this one is a must-read!

I did not enjoy this book. I know it has a lot of good reviews but I just don't understand why.

How does no other reader notice the horrible sentence structure in this book?! Oh. My. God. The author continually writes sentences with mixed up tenses.

Example: "The hills became flatland, as Georgia melts into Florida." Hello? Became is past tense, melts is present tense. What the heck? This happens so often and it is so weird. I have read books with spelling errors but I have never encountered this before. Apparently it was not edited by anyone other than the author herself.

I had a hard time getting past (or as the author would write, passed) that so it took me a while to read this. But finish it I did! It was nothing special, story-wise, and the characters were blah. I just didn't enjoy it much. Wouldn't recommend it. A lot of the descriptions made me roll my eyes. "He was like a jalapeno, bright and smooth, but dangerously hot. A small part of me wanted to bite him." Really? I'm not sure why everyone loves this book, it's not even one of those with really steamy scenes or an appealing male lead. I don't get it. The good news is that once you start reading you'll know immediately if you like the style of the book, and you don't have to get too far in before you hate it and can stop reading.
