I thought I would save some money by purchasing this grip. It worked fine for several months until the other day. I was shooting a track meet (with canon 30D), and suddenly my camera stopped working. At about the same time, I also noticed a god-awful chemical-like smell that about made me throw up. I opened up the battery compartment and the smell became worse. I don't know if the smell was from the batteries or the plastic or what, but I went home to further investigate the nature of my problem. I should note that I was using canon batteries that had been fully charged prior to the event (I had shot about 400 frames). Troubleshooting, I put two more batteries in, and this time the camera turned on, but it was frozen--auto focus didn't work, couldn't adjust the settings, etc. It began however, to take shots in rapid succession--as I had no card in the camera at the time, it was very rapid. I'm assuming this didn't do any damage to the shutter, but I was still a little alarmed. I took the grip off the camera; put the one of the same batteries in the normal slot and the camera worked fine.
It appears that no damage has been done to the camera, but the grip is clearly finished. I'm not even going to waste my time trying to get a refund or replacement; I'm going to buy the canon grip. Avoid the temptation to save a few bucks, this is clearly not worth it.
