I'd like to first say that I'm a professional, both journalism and wedding photography, and that I've been using the Honl Photo Professional Light System for almost 3 years now.

That being said, I needed a 1/4'' honeycomb grid, and I saw this Opteka for 1/3 of the price of the Honl product. I wasn't really hesitant, and I'm always game to try new products (at least try...)

Anyway, I received it and to my surprise it had an included speed strap with it! I had purchased an additional Honl strap for my 2nd flash, but now that I have 3 flashes, I'm just going to hold onto the extra strap. [...]

Anyway, kudos for a $13 product that includes the normally $10 strap.

The 1/4'' honey grid works as expected. I purchased the 1/4'' because my Honl 1/8'' was too tight in some situations (usually couples standing with one another, I needed a larger light circle). [...]

Some people complain about how loose these feel? Honestly, the Opteka (for some reason) stays on tighter than my Honl system.

The one issue I have is how the honeycomb grid is held together by the outer case - there was a gap on the side between the two cases holding together the grid. Some adhesive velcro was holding the two sides together. That's fine, but it didn't seem tight enough. Nothing a few strips of gaffers tape didn't solve!

LONG AND SHORT: if you need a 1/4'' honeycomb grid and a speed strap, you can't beat this price: I'm actually very happy with this product. I'll be looking into some other Opteka equipment in the future.

So often you buy cheaper versions of equipment only to purchase the more expensive one later. Not the case with the 1/4" grid from Opteka. I've was debating on the Honl grids when I ran across the Opteka for a fraction of the cost, and I couldn't be happier. The build is solid. I foresee this grid lasting for years.

Bought it for a Canon 580exII. Fits with room to spare--the honeycomb area is 3.5" x 2.375"--likely big enough for any speedlight. Also for you detail types, it produced a 4.5' diameter circle on a flat wall 6' away. If you want a tighter circle, guess you should go for the 1/8" honeycomb model. Or get both and save the fretting--probably worth the 13 bucks you'll spend on it!

I do not think you can fit this thing reliably to your flash. I usually use gaffers tape. Still, because of how wide the grid is, there is a gap and an angle between the grid and the flash. In a few minutes the grid becomes loose. Not enough to fall off mind you. Yet I never felt secure about leaving the grid on the flash for long. Given a low price, though, this is an acceptable compromise. Probably if the grid was smaller, the fit would be better. I use it with Nikon SB-600 and SB-800 flashes.

Great product.
Price is very competitive, and it is well made.
Compared to the Honl you can buy almost 3 of these grids for the price of one Honl.

On the downside this is a one size fits all so the head is bigger than most flash heads (even on my sb900), so getting this to sit right takes a little extra adjusment.
I like to use an elastic band (which I place around the flash head and straps in addition to the velcro straps. The velcro band which goes around the flash head isn't as secure as the ones made by Lumiquest. For the price this is a great product, that does the job well. Even if you opeted to buy the Lumiquest straps (which affix to your flash head more securely) this product still comes out ahead.

This thing is well made and does exactly what I expected. Hey, it's a honeycomb in a frame, not the space shuttle, so that are not that many parts. But - you do get some unexpected extras. The frame has Velcro strips on the short sides - there are two spare adhesive backed strips. There's also a Velcro strap that wraps around the speedlight head. I almost purchased just this strap for $15! You can use this to mount flaps and other mods. I have some foamcore cut to shape with Velcro that I stick to the strap. The grid creates a concentrated oval of light aimed directly at your target - works exactly like a shotgun mic.

To mount the grid to the speedlight, there's two Velcro straps. So, yes, you get a LOT of Velcro with this thing. Fits any size speedlight - works fine on my smaller 430EXII and large 580EXII.

This honeycomb grid works great, although its construction has its shortcomings.
Great, clean light constrictor for great price. Makes a balanced, circular 'spotlight' effect.
Comes with handy cinch strap, but the fit is not too secure.
But who cares, it works!

I first found out about this modifier from Opteka after seeing a Honl grid used in a you tube tutorial. I thought the Honl was a bit pricey but I did not want to go the DIY route so I took a leap of faith.

The velcro strap that goes around the flash head is very secure when you pull it tight and hold before fastening. This first step makes for a fairly secure attachment for the grid even with the flash angled down 45 degrees. There is a bit of loosening that occurs between the strap and the grid over the first few minutes of use, but not enough for the grid to fall off.

I really like the results I've gotten so far. I plan on buying another so I have a pair to use for rim lighting.
