Editorial Reviews

Last year, press everywhere agreed I:Scintilla as the one of the most outstanding discoveries by longtime pioneering genre label, Alfa Matrix. Their Havestar EPCD was an immediate club favourite and I:Scintilla rapidly began appearing on countless compilations both on the metal and electro scene while their video for 'Capsella' received heavy rotation around the world. Today, Illinois-based quartet continue their fast ascension towards the top with their new album, Optics, an intoxicating blend of industrial beats and atmospheric creations. The seductive voice of female singer Brittany Bindrim instantly brings comparisons to Garbage and Evanescence, while their intricate layers of guitars and dominating electro synth lines bring them closer to the feel of Nine Inch Nails. Catchy and furious at the same time, I:Scintilla offer an addictive cocktail of hard-edged industrial atmospheres, intense female vox, crunchy guitars and electro beats!

Having been exposed to their earlier album release "The Approach" (which has earlier versions of a few songs on this album), I had already developed a fondness for this band before I purchased this one. I've been listening to this album for many months now and it's become a staple of my collection. Sexy and captivating female vocals combined with a delicious industrial/ebm/metal/goth sound that I find impossible to resist. Difficult for me to compare this band but my closest comparisons would be a cross between Curve and The Azoic -- both of which are coincidentally two of my favorite artists.

Sidenote: I sprung for the 2-cd limited edition version of this album when it was released and am pleased to say the bonus cd of remixes has some great stuff on it and is worth picking up if you can.

I went to a Cruxshadows show where I:Scintilla was opening for them. They stole the show. This album is amazing, much rougher than their later albums, and less polished. The unrefined sound makes for a great addition to the music. A must-buy.

Some people swear by Pandora and other services to find new music, but I like to own my music so I can play my favorite tunes whenever and wherever I please. In browsing Amazon's recommendations for me, I ran across this gem.

I:Scintilla has quickly become one of my favorite bands. I played the demo for a song titled, "worth the wait" on the Dying and Falling album and I loved it so much that I immediately bought several of their albums. It was like a compulsion, I just HAD to own it. I think Optics is the best overall, but other albums have some gems.

Why are they a favorite? While I wouldn't say that any one song is my favorite, but I can play the whole album and not want to skip a track. Plus I've owned this album for many months now and I am still not sick of it. That doesn't happen very often. For most bands there is almost always a track or two that I need to skip or after a month of play I'll never listen again, but this just does it for me.

I personally would categorize the sound as more of a darker industrial sound. The most similar band I know is probably Lacuna Coil, if that comparison helps anyone.

Check out their other albums as well.

I've been listening to I:S since 2009, I think I found them on Pandora and so glad I did. They are an amazing one of a kind band. This is def their best album in my opinion, but Dying & Falling is good too (with Dying & Falling being the best song on that album).
