I bought this charger in early January 2013 and have had lots of time to put it through its paces. After using it for about two months, the display began to lose scattered segments then the unit would fail to work at all. This was an early production issue that has been apparently settled. Obtaining warranty service was frustrating, as the Optima reps indicated over and over they weren't receiving my email attachments or my faxes of the receipt needed to honor the warranty. After several frustrating weeks and escalations I finally was shipped a new Optima 1200 with a prepaid return label for the defective unit. The replacement unit has been working fine so far. A few weeks ago the side panel where the USB outlet and maintainer socket fell off, it appears the plastic surrounding the mounting screws is thin and had crumbled. I don't abuse my equipment, and given the initial history of my Optima charger, I treated it with kid gloves. Rather than going through another warranty ordeal, I decided to repair the unit myself, modifying the mounting means of the side panel by using longer screws, spacers and modifying the internal support that holds a small PCB with the USB power supply, the trickle charger output wiring, jacks and LEDs. This should be a permanent repair, time will tell if I have other issues. Internally, the 1200 is quite robust and technically solid with a rather impressive overall design.

As a charger it works very well and is quite versatile with all the various charging modes. The AGM (Optima) modes give the batteries a longer bulk charge mode than do the conventional settings, holding the peak voltage a bit lower to prevent outgassing the cells.

I've used a lot of chargers over the years and still own a nice, trusty Schumacher charger with .3/2/10/50A settings for over 20 years that still works great. But here's the deal, I've had several batteries that my old charger wouldn't bring back from the dead, even if I left them trickle charge on low for days or a week. Many of these batteries were in vehicles that didn't get driven much and were not very old. The Optima charger is supposedly one of the most advanced chargers on the market and claims to be able to charge batteries other chargers can't. I figured if I could bring back a couple batteries, it would pay for itself.

The first battery I tried, my old charger would not charge up, so I figured it would be a good first test. I hooked up the Optima charter and it ran through it's pre-charge battery analyzing stage, which takes about 2 minutes and started charging. It's really interesting to watch the gauge as it analyzes the battery. After it started, it spent several hours in the 'conditioning' mode. Several hours later it was charged and automatically went into the 'Maintain' mode. Just as it claimed, it was charged up! This is a $90+ battery. And, in fact, I put it in my snow plow truck (plow pumps take a lot of juice) to test it out ...and I've been using it for the last 2 months. I've plowed a lot of snow with it too. When it was 21 degrees below zero it started, no problems. And get this: when I was putting it in the plow truck, I discovered it was 6 years old!

Here's another story. At work, we had 2 work vans that had been sitting for a couple months due to people that quit. In that time the GPS systems completely drained the batteries and they sat that way for a couple months. They were about 3 years old.

I bought this fancy battery charger and it works pretty good. After about two months half of the display went out. Getting ahold of Optima is proving to be very difficult. Until my warranty is dealt with I cannot recommend this product. I would buy a regular battery charger and a battery tender instead of this expensive complicated charger/tender with a fragile display and poor customer service from Optima.

I bought this charger because I needed one for my truck - works great for that. What really impressed me though was hooking up a supposedly "dead" battery from a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Source) connected to my computer system. I hooked up the battery to this charger and about 2 hours later the battery readout was at 100% and the UPS is working fine now. I don't know how long it will last, but the charger is reading its capacity at 100% so I'm guessing it's good for the immediate future. That saves me about $60 - because I'd ordinarily go to Batteries Plus and just get a new battery.

I must admit I was anxious to try this unit and Amazon has the best price $149. If you don't see this price then they are out of stock and check back every day until you do.

I don't have time to write anything to long but will say that this is the best charger I have ever owned! It does so much and is very complete package! I am using a desulfator along with it to restore old battery. This unit starts at 1.25v which no charger will do. I have a Battery Tender which was not able able to charger and bring back one of my Odyssey battery's but the Optima did. Anyhow its your call what you buy but your a fool if you pass this charger up for a any lesser. I have learn my lessons that's all I will say.
