Having the ribbon was really nice as there is no way I would have been able to read the codes as the card ends up facing the bottom of the machine. On my ISA machine it faced up so I could read both the card and the cable. Double check that the rear label on the card faces the rear (back) of the motherboard/computer (follow the arrow).
The manual introduction was hard to read but the codes themselves are good enough. Make sure you know your bios manufacturer which is likely printed on a chip on the motherboard or will flash when you power it on.
I give this 5 stars because it works. Seriously considered giving it 4 because of the manual but it works so well it deserves 5. Just be careful and make sure you put it in right.
Correct #1: Plugged into an ISA slot with the "ISA BUS" label side, and the "REAR" arrow pointing towards the rear of the PC
Correct #2: Plugged into a 5V PCI slot with the "PCI BUS" label side and the other arrow pointing towards the *front* of the PC. Note that this is the only orientation it can be plugged into a 5V PCI slot because of the notch in the card.
Fail #1: The "ISA BUS" side of the card plugged into an ISA slot backwards. This can be avoided by ensuring that the "REAR" arrow always points to the rear of the PC when using the ISA bus connector.
Fail #2: Plugging the "PCI Bus" side into an ISA slot. This one should be pretty obvious
Fail #3: Plugging the "PCI bus" slot side into a PCIe x16 slot. This one is an easy mistake to make as many newer motherboards don't have any PCI slots. It's a design fail by the manufacturer because they shaved off a few pennies by making the card narrower than a regular PCI card. If the PCI bus fingers were the proper width, it would not fit into a PCIe slot.
Fail #4: Plugging the "PCI bus" slot side into a 3.3V PCI slot. This is probably the most serious as the documentation fails to mention the distinction and actually incorrectly documents this as the proper configuration. 3.3V and 5V PCI slots use a different notch to make sure that PCI cards that only support 3.3V only fit in a 3.3V PCI slot, 5V only cards only fit in 5V slots, and cards that support both fit in either slot. Physically, the slot itself is just rotated 180°. 5V slots have the key away from the back of the PC, 3.3V slots have the notch towards the rear of the PC. Almost all older PCs have 5V slots. Some newer PCs have 3.3V slots. The card itself actually fits perfectly into a 3.3V slot *if* it is rotated 180° and plugged in backwards. This will cause many shorts of signal lines to ground or power.
The documentation not only fails to mention the distinction, it actually has the instruction "Notice: the component side should face to the power pin". This is correct for plugging into the ISA slot, but incorrect for plugging into the PCI slot.
I haven't tested these 4 fail configurations to see if they actually lead to smoke. I suspect at a minimum #2 and #3 would. #1 and #4 may, but protections within the card and motherboard may prevent actual damage.
