Bought this to use in place of a hard drive in a Roland VS880 digital audio workstation. Works GREAT!... No more hard drive "whirring" in the background. Using a Sandisk 4GB SD card along with this adapter... Highly recommend this product... Thankyou.

Can't give this thing accolades enough!
A great way to breathe new life into an old laptop. Says for Amiga, but is basically an IDE HDD. Some older BIOS might not support it, but my old Pentium II Compaq Armada loves it! Be sure you perform the partitioning and formatting right on the machine to be booting from it. You might have to issue the DOS "FDisk /MBR" command, and you mustn't forget to make sure to use FDisk to set the boot partition to 'Active' or you can't boot from it!
Hope this helps you old schoolers out there!

I bought this with the intent of resurrecting an old Pentium-M laptop that I had lying around, just so I could set it up in my bedroom to stream Pandora. I had a spare 8GB card, so I figured this was worth a shot.

It was detected by both the BIOS and the OS as a normal IDE hard disk, and it partitioned and formatted without a hitch. So there's that. But I bought this particular adapter because a previous reviewer said he got 20MB/sec times out of it, and I was unable to do better than 9.7MB/sec. That's VERY slow - slower than the slowest IDE hard drives. The SD card was a class 10 card that benchmarked at 11.0MB/sec using a USB adapter on the same machine, so the bottleneck was definitely this adapter.

Running Ubuntu 12.04, there is significant lag in starting and running apps, and everything just feels sluggish. I would presume that Windows XP would feel pretty similar or worse. It's acceptable in my intended use as a streaming-audio client; it was cheaper than buying a tablet, and it IS silent. But it would be horrible to use in an everyday PC.

I'm quite impressed by this product. I'm using it with an old Apple PowerBook (year 2000 model). It originally came with a pokey and noisy 20GB 2.5-inch PATA hard drive; I have since replaced it with a better (but still old) 80GB hard drive. It's not my primary Mac these days, but I still use it around the house.

I replace the PowerBook's hard drive with this adapter and a 32GB SDXC card from Sony (described as "Class 10 - 40MB/s"). I had previously tried this same card in the built-in high-speed SD card slot of a recent Mac mini. I was able to reformat the card, install Mac OS X on it, and boot the Mac mini from the SDXC card. It worked surprisingly well, and this SDXC card was quite fast for this purpose. So, I knew my SDXC card was fast enough.

In the old PowerBook, using this adapter, it seems to run at least as fast as the 80GB PATA hard drive. But my PowerBook is now silent in operation when its fan is not ON, and the fan comes ON less often now because there is no longer any heat coming from a hard drive. I was able to install Mac OS X (10.4.11 "Tiger") on it like it was a hard drive; I cloned my existing system from the hard drive. And I have a "modern" source for new internal storage for my old trusty PowerBook.

The adapter is very small compared to a 2.5-inch hard drive, and it does not have any provision for mounting, so it is necessary to use some padding material to secure the adapter. It also has a very bright red LED that is constantly ON when powered, and it's visible through the side vent and edge of keyboard. It actually looks cool, but if you don't want to see its shine as part of your application, you may want to cover the LED with some black tape before installing it.

Worked great in my small Vaio as an inexpensive ssd. No issues with BIOS or operating system drivers. Has operated reliably since installation.
