1.0 out of 5 stars Not “true 4k” and so many issues
By CRP on November 25, 2020
This is not a 4K projector. This is a 1080P projector that uses the Texas Instruments XPR chip to reflect a mirrored image of a 1080P image four times at half a pixel distance from the original. They can get away calling it 4K because there are at least eight million pixels on the screen.

You want a “native 4K projector.” They are all expensive, the cheapest is around $5,000 as of 11/2020. Every “4K” projector in this price range ($1,000-$3,000) uses some form of mirroring called pixel shift. The online projector gurus claiming you can’t tell the difference are wrong, at least if your screen is as large as mine at 125”. I sit 12-13 feet away and can easily make out pixels in text. The reason this type of 4K projector is no good, well one of the reasons as there are many, is pixel size. A 4K pixel should be small, one quarter the size of a 1080P image pixel when on the same screen size. Just like your iPhone’s Retina display. The pixels are tiny which is why you can’t make out the individual ones even starring at it from six inches away. With a pixel shifter projector you are getting huge 1080P-size pixels, just more of them. This doesn’t give you the smooth edges around text or anything else requiring fine detail. It gives you a lot of large jagged pixels that are overlapping which then blurs the image. Sit back 15+ feet and the picture just appears soft but not pixelated. That is the first major problem with this projector.

Problem number two: the lens. There is an enormous amount of chromatic aberration (aka purple or green fringing). This happens when a bright light is next to a hard dark line. See the photos I’ve attached. Even some good camera lenses have this issue and photographers use computer software to remove it in post. You can’t remove it with your projector unless you blur the image, then you have an entirely new problem, an out of focus picture. The fix is better quality glass and special treatment to the glass to eliminate it.

Also regarding lens quality is sharpness. This lens has a lot of softness at the edges. What you’ll find is that you need to decided where you want your screen to be sharp and know everything else will be varying degrees of out of focus. A couple other images I attached illustrate how if one corner of the screen is sharp it will be soft on the opposing corner. This is especially annoying when playing video games on the new PS5 & Xbox. As with all zoom lenses they are sharpest closest to it’s wide end, this means avoid using your zoom whenever possible.

Lastly, regarding the lens, there is a lot of red light leak. See photo. I shrunk the projected image so you can see how much of a red cast there is. I have not been able to remove this with the available color adjustments.

Problem number three: black level. The claimed black level of this projector is absurd. It is nowhere near what they say. I am a stickler about black levels as it makes an enormous difference in image quality. Compare my 65” LG OLED to this and you’ll be blown away by what OLED can do. It is unrealistic to compare the two technologies here, but it is helpful if you know what the image is supposed to look like so you know how bad this image is. You can turn on all the fancy settings but it doesn’t do much except make the fan run very loud. The dynamic black setting proves more distracting than anything else as the projector can’t process the image and adjust its black level fast enough for your eye to not see it occur. The result is a screen that always looks like it is tweaking its brightness.

Problem number four: HDR10. It’s so bad that you are better off keeping it turned off. Just turn on Bright mode for the bulb, which will wear out the bulb faster, and adjust your brightness, gamma, and contrast accordingly. It is very unfortunate this feature doesn’t work well. You’ll notice it right away and think your settings are off. It’s the projector.

Issue number five: the remote. This is somehow the worst part. The only interaction we have with the projector once it is mounted is the remote, so why do companies so often skimp on a nice remote? LG figured this out with their OLED TVs and provides a “magic remote” which really is excellent. The remote with this device will frustrate you to no end and blind you in the process. Press a button and 30 LEDs activate lighting up your entire room (see photo). This really is a major annoyance in dark rooms as it is painful on the eyes, no joke. It’s like starring into an SUV’s halogen high beams. Everything about the remote is bad.

Issue number six: split screen. There seems to be an issue with the Optima presenting two different quality images side by side- see photos. This is an intermittent issues that happens every so often when you turn on the projector. It requires restarting the device and crossing your fingers that it is fine after the reboot.

I can go on and on about issues with this projector. At more than twice the cost of my BenQ HT2050A I thought I’d be getting a substantial step-up in image quality, but it is actually a step down. I am truly blown away by how bad this is. No matter the calibration adjustments I’ve done. Running on a fiber optic HDMI. Just don’t do it. Get a normal 1080P projector at a fair price or get a real “native 4K” projector by JVC or Sony at a high price but that will last you the next ten years. These fake 4K projectors by all the brands (BenQ, Optoma, Epson, etc.) just don’t justify their price in the slightest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted & more!!!
    By shadynasty92 on May 8, 2020
I’ve been in the projector market for about a month now. I purchased the UHD51a only to find it was coming from China and had an unknown delivery date. During my 2 month wait, I decided to do more research on the entry level 4K vs high level 1080p quality. I found most 4K projectors to be low 2400 lumens or less requiring a dark room, however I wanted both, a projector that looked excellent in the dark and viewable in ambient light as I do not have a designated theater room, but an open basement with a bar and theater area. I wanted something that if we could have the bar lights on and still be able to get a great picture. This projector is just that. The only 3400 lumens projector I could find with an RGBWRGBW color scale. What I read from projectorcentral.com was that most 4K projectors are RGBRGB, but the W (RGBWRGBW) standing for White, is what gives the projector the boost it needs to higher lumens without sacrificing color quality. I am still new with the projector and I will update this post as I try new things. My 3D glasses should be here next week!
