The well structured chapters do not bore you with endless amounts of information. The information provided by Aidan Duffy is just right to get you thinking about how you can better yourself in the workplace as a consultant. Moreover, what is really helpful is that a chapter is dedicated to knowing the project lifecycle. This is something that is paramount in todays business world as everything is project oriented. Aidan also provides very good information on the differences between being a functional and technical consultant, making a reader understand and think about which career route they may go down.
Being an experienced Oracle consultant Aidan provides helpful chapters preparing for interviews, considering and accepting offers and how to prepare for transition into a new role. I feel this is a very helpful guide for those wishing to pursue a career as an Oracle consultant.
The author never tells how or where to learn Oracle Financial nor Oracle Financial Consulting. He never tells how to enter the field.
His knowledge communicated includes such wonders as "ask questions", "try to extend your assignments", "network well", "bill properly".
How he sleeps at night while selling this garbage boggles the mind. Wish to God I could get my money back.
I concur with Aidan's comments about the professionalism and drive one must have to succeed. Unlike permanent employment you have fixed scope of works and a timeline within which to deliver. Once complete you are hopefully on to your next assignment or as indicate, being awarded another piece of work with your current client.
Having been and independent consultant myself for many years I cannot stress enough that you need to look upon yourself as a company...you are in both a legal and contractual view point. If you think about the services and solutions you are implementing for your client such as learning & development and performance management these are exactly the same principles you need to apply to your own situation. As a consultant being multi-skilled and highly adaptable will put you in high demand and hopefully reduce any of those unwanted 'out of contract' periods. Aidan also highlights the need to have your accounting processes in place from the outset and I concur wholeheartedly. Remember not all of the revenue you make is yours as HMRC will remind you and that you get the "extra", as one colleague used to remind me, to cover sickness, holidays, training and being the last person standing on a P1 issue on a Friday afternoon.
Whatever you do, enjoy, learn and use the opportunity to help achieve what ever goals you are looking to fulfil. In my experience and observations contracting tends to fit a lifestyle and period in your life. It may be short lived or you whole career but if you want to maximise the experience and opportunities then from a business perspective reading and taking onboard much of Aidan's guidance will serve you well.
I really and truly recommend everyone to buy it who are in profession in Oracle field.
