The Orange Crush PiX CR12L makes an excellent affordable practice amp. The Crush PiX CR12L makes it easy to dial in your tone with 3-band EQ, plus Overdrive and Gain controls. Sporting legendary Orange looks, including Orange basket weave Tolex and a woven speaker grille, the compact Crush PiX CR12L weighs just a smidge over 12 pounds, making it quite portable, indeed. It has a 6" speaker, and is quite possibly the loudest 12 watts we've ever heard. Whether you're a seasoned pro picker or just learning your first-position chords, the Orange Crush PiX CR12L makes an awesome practice amp.
Top Customer Reviews
Lovingly assembled by factory workers in China, the materials feel like some of the more expensive Orange models.
My only complaint is that the three-way EQ doesn't seem very dymanic. I'm still happy with it and can get sounds worth recording. Five stars.
Build/Quality- While the side of the box says "Made in the PRC" it hardly qualifies as a "cheap product". The amp is made of wood construction and feels really solid. The knobs on the top respond great. I've moved the amp around pretty often and have a bad habit of resting my feet on top of it while playing and it never feels like its going to fall apart. Plus, who can't say the orange exterior doesn't stand out, it looks great!
Sound- I was looking around at getting a cheap modeling amp like the Fender Mustang I but after playing with it I ultimately decided that I didn't really like the pre-made sounds and even though the software allowed me to 'create' sounds it just didn't sound right. This amp has a total of 6 knobs and I've been able to make a really nice clean sound as well as a crunchy distortion; even my distortion friendly ESP has a nice clean tone. Not having these sounds pre-made has really allowed me to experiment and discover how this amp can sound as well as how my guitar really sounds. I haven't had the desire to hook up any pedals as I've pretty much been able to create anything I need with what the amp gives. This amp has enough volume that it will still bug the neighbors at its full volume but might get washed out in anything larger than a small practice session.
Overall- Such a great value with a solid sound. The only thing I wish this had was an AUX IN, tuner or 1/4" headphone jack like on the more expensive models but for the price you can't beat the quality you get here. Highly recommend as a simple and great sounding bedroom/practice amp with none of those crappy modeled effects to mess with!
The overdrive is great. Very responsive. The gain control is spot on. I am able to dial in a nice mid range tone with the three different levels. The only thing I would wish for is a tuner on the amp. But for the price, it has everything I could ask for. Most importantly, it has the sound that I was after when combined with my Nighthawk.
For a small, 6" speaker amp this thing throws out some loud, clear sound and I was pleasantly surprised. The gain and overdrive can be cranked up for a nice crunchy sound or keep them set low for nice, warm cleans that sound pretty good for solid state electronics. If you don't want to mess around with pedals for a bedroom setup like me then this amp is great for that. You will not get heavy distortion with this amp so if you're looking for that either look elsewhere or buy a separate pedal. I paired this amp with my TC Electronics Looper so I can stack up the riffs to create songs in small places.
The amp itself seems well built and comes with higher end features like corner protectors and the ability to control the gain, overdrive, low, mid, and high range, and comes with a standard 1/4" input and a 1/4" headphone jack when you want to be really quiet or just listen through headphones. If you've never played through headphones I highly recommend it since you can really hear how great your guitar sounds.
So if you're looking for a small but reasonably versatile amp for your bedroom or even to travel with this might be it.
