ORIGINAL REVIEW - I bought this in May 2017. I give it four stars at the moment. If the results persist, I'll try to come back and upgrade to five stars. I've tried a lot of swing aids. Some have worked initially, some haven't worked at all. Those that have worked initially have not always continued to help. For instance, the hinged club. It helps get a terrible swing on plane, but it can be easily fooled. The Orange Whip sure seems like the real deal to me. I'm a mid-teens handicapper. I've shaved five or six strokes off in the last two years, so I've been improving, but the Orange Whip has really helped with consistency and repeatability and also has increased distance and, often (but not always!) accuracy. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about mechanics these days. I think about tempo and rhythm and I think about where on the clubface I make impact. The Orange Whip absolutely helps with tempo and helps ensure the lower body initiates the downswing and also helps ensure that I don't rush my back swing or my transition. Also, it helps me keep my arms and body connected, and, in my case, cocking the wrists at the right time. That sounds like a lot of mechanics, but, really, those are results and the Orange Whip causes you to just focus on tempo. Also, the big orange ball really helps you see your swing path and, if you scrape the ground, the bottom of your arc. I believe that helps with ball placement. All of this has led to better contact throughout my bag and has me driving the ball the best I've ever driven it. Even when I miss the fairway, I am finding myself much farther up the hole which can often still be an ok place to be. I used to struggle to hit it 200 yards straight with the driver. I could often outhit my driver with my woods or even my 3 hybrid. Now - while my driving distance can certainly still be variable - my best shots are out there 240-260. Where I used to find myself with a 3 or 4 hybrid into a green, I'm now frequently finding myself with an 8 or 9 iron in my hands. I've put in a lot of practice too, but the Orange Whip is a constant part of my routine now, and it sure seems to me to help. I do think you need somewhat of a functional swing to take advantage of the Orange Whip. I bought the little one for my kids (elementary school age) and they haven't quite figured it out yet. But if you have a decent understanding of what you're supposed to be doing, I think this device will help get you there faster and with less of a focus on mechanics. By focusing on getting into rhythm, you can quiet your mind and let you body do what you know it can do. Now, if I could only get my lag putting down!
Fast forward to two weeks later, we're playing my club championship. My alarm didn't go off, and I speed (don't speed kids) to the course, arriving 5 minutes before my tee time. All I can do is get my clubs out of my bag and literally run to the first tee. My buddy is there warming up and sees me. He comes over and after asking what am I doing so late says, "Hey man, swing this it'll get you warmed up quick".
This may be the biggest understatement I have ever heard in my life. Initially holding the Orange Whip, the feel was odd. There is a very flexible shaft in my hand with a weighted orange ball at the end, what the heck is this? How is this going to warm me up? I take one practice swing, and instantly I can feel what it's trying to do. If you get out of tempo, it's gonna feel bad. I took maybe 5-8 warm up swings with the Orange Whip, and felt better than if I'd just hit a bucket at the range, seriously.
I stepped up to the first tee and striped one down the center, went on to come into the clubhouse as the tournament leader. I now own an Orange Whip.
