I am now the proud owner of three Orbit 62001 timers

This timer uses 2 9v batteries. I just think people need to know that so they can have the correct batteries on hand when they get the timer. Hopefully Amazon.com will use my edit on their info page and add that information. :) It's like getting a new battery operated toy at Christmas and not having the correct batteries so you can play with it. NOT GOOD. The 9v batteries are very easy to install. Remove 2 phillips head screws on the back and pop the batteries in...NO SNAPS TO CONNECT. Very easy install.

I, again, had to replace 3 timers this year (seems to be a yearly occurrence) and after purchasing a cheap, poorly made Gilmore timer I decided to try the Orbit. I purchased my first one in the Spring and it has worked very well all season. Since it continued to do its job, a few months ago I purchased a second one and today I received my third one.

The timer is a no brainer as far as programming it goes. It's very simple and the basics are on the lid that covers the program panel. It does come with a book with more indepth instructions though. You can program it to water Monday-Sunday.....choosing any particular days you wish to water. Or you can choose every 2 days or every 3 days to water. It has the capability to water 4 times a day if you so choose. You can water manually by pushing the manual button and setting a length of time to water at that time and then it shuts off automatically and goes back to "auto run" which is your programmed settings. You can cancel a watering for 24 hours by hitting the "clear" button. After that, it goes back to "auto run". You can stop the watering indefinitely by pushing the "off" button which cancels the "auto run", but that will not cancel out your programmed settings. To use your programmed settings again, just hit "auto run" and you're good to go. The timer seems to be sturdy and reliable. *knock on wood* The timer I purchased this Spring is still using the original 9v batteries too and I water every morning.

So far, I love this timer. IF it should fail next season, I will update my review. I use to be able to buy a timer and use it for years and years, but in recent years it seems I can only get one summer out of them...if I'm lucky. I always bring my timers in the house for the winter and remove the batteries before storing them, but the last 4 timers (before the Orbits) I bought all died after one season of use. A Gilmore piece of junk I bought this Spring lasted only weeks and wouldn't shut off.

I can recommend this timer, highly, with the caveat....I've only had mine for one Spring and Summer. Only time will tell if it lasts for years. I can only hope. If it fails to work next Spring, I will let you know.

UPDATE: May 5, 2011

I just hooked up my 4 Orbit timers and all 4 work perfectly! If anything changes, I will update again.

I bought this at the beginning of July and it will not shut off Mid Oct. It's life was what, 31/2 months, I do not think it is worth the MONEY.
NEWS FLASH!!!!!
Additional information------ As I stated above the obit 62001 quit working. Because it worked so well to begin with I decided to take it apart. When I got it all a part I found a couple of drops of water in the piston barrel that is activated by the magnet that surrounds it to close a diaphragm, shutting off the water flow. Took a paper towel, dried out the barrel and piston and BLAM it is working again. I do not know if that was the cause of it not working but I am willing to take it apart each time it stops shutting off the water because when it works it's great.

unreliable piece of crap

I purchased three of these in the last two years and they all failed showing the exact same problem. The valve fails and won't shut off the water flow, flooding my garden. The first worked for a whole season, I liked the unit and new season came l bought a 2nd for a different area, then I needed another and got a 3rd. As soon I got the third unit, the first failed and flooded my garden. Then 2 weeks later the 2nd failed, flooding my Greenhouse, killing everything in it, the last didn't even last a month and I didn't ask for a replacement valve, because reading the bad reviews it didn't make sense to replace something that already cost me much more then I have paid for in the first place in lost plants and water costs and just will fail again. This unit is unreliable and we all know that is the most important point in having a timer. It's amazing this crap is still being sold. I will never buy a Orbit timer again, I don't trust their quality and reliability. I need a new timer but it won't be from them!

I originally gave these timers a 5 star review, but after having 4 of them for awhile, I am finding I just can't trust them. The biggest problem is when they go from working just find to constant "on"... In southern california, this is considered sinful, not t mention expensive! Is has happened to 2 of my 4 stations. The other problem is when they go from working fine to just not working at all even tho the batteries are good. I love the idea of these, but my cheaper more cumbersome older models have been much more reliable.

Original post: This is a great little unit, and I have tried a number of them over the years. This one seems well made, is easy to use, and has the added feature of being able to remove the programmable box, so that you can actually read what you are doing without bending over in the hot sun and craning your neck in a contortion to try and read the panel.

Electronics are great, the valve always fails

This is the second time I've purchased this product. The first lasted 3 years before the valve stopped moving. When the previous one failed, the electronics were still good, and would make a 'click' when kicking the water on or off, though the valve never actually opened. It's not user-serviceable. The options are plentiful though, and I like how it doesn't add much length to the line, with the electronics off to the side. I didn't have a ton of clearance from my hose faucet to the patio slab, and this did the trick.

Update, 5/23/16 This is now the third purchase of this product. This time the unit worked for one season before coming inside for the winter. The next season, with fresh batteries, the electronics continue to operate, but the solenoid doesn't actually open the valve more than half the time. When it opens, it doesn't reliably close, resulting in my lawn flooding. Orbit customer service is non-existent. I waited on the phone on hold for 40 minutes before giving up, and the online chat didn't get me a response for just as long.

Good and then died. Now discontinued.

I did love it, and it worked for a couple years without issue and then lost its brains. It has been discontinuued and no longer being supported so if you find one, don't buy it.
