The Orbit B-hyve smart device app is used to control multiple devices. You can purchase this item which includes a WiFi hub, the model without that is Bluetooth only (but which can be upgraded to use WiFi with this included hub), another timer that will control other Orbit B-hyve products, etc. While using the same app for multiple devices in theory shouldn't be an issue, in this case it can be confusing because some options are not relevant for the product you may have purchased, but are still visible even if you don't want to or can't use the feature.
Things to note:
Each device is separate from the other. You control and schedule them separately.
Programs - This is where you "program" the faucet timers. You can create multiple sets of schedules for each device. You can have a device come on each day of the week (you can select the days individually), at an interval (every 1, 2, 3 etc days), even or odd days. You can specify multiple start times throughout the day (come on at 8am, 12pm, 3pm). You will pick the default zone and select for how long the faucet will remain open for the days/times you picked. You can also specify a watering budget (which admittedly i have no clue what that does because i couldn't find documentation on it, it may not even be relevant to this device...so i left it alone at 100%)
Zones - Although completely irrelevant and not meaningful for these devices, a Zone is the area that the device will water. They each only control 1 zone, but despite that possibly obvious fact, you still have to select that 1 zone when setting up the schedule. You will see prompts and warnings that you haven't configured a schedule for the zones on the device. From reading others complaints, I think a lot of the struggles would be eliminated if they just defaulted to the only zone available, but once you realize that they sell other devices that control 6 or 12 zones and they happen to use the same interface for our single zone devices, it makes a little more sense.
So how do you actually program these timers?
1. Once you download the app on your phone/tablet, you will need to create a Orbit B-hyve account.
2. The app will attempt to enable Bluetooth on your phone for the initial pairing of the devices.
3. You should then plugin the hub (choose an inside wall that is closet to where your faucet timers will be installed and where you have a WiFi signal). This device will connect on a 2.4GHz signal only. The signal doesn't need to be very strong from my experience (mine is pretty far from my WiFi router).
4. You will then add the hub to your account via the app (it should default to pairing mode).
5. Next you install 2 double A batteries in the faucet timer (you will hear it click twice as it opens and shuts the valve to confirm it is functioning correctly).
6. You will add a new device in the app and you should see the icon that looks like the timer with the MAC of device. You will need to tell it the location (which is annoying because you do it for each device you add...or it seems like you do. It remembers what you previously provided, but seems to keep prompted on each new device. I assume this is for people who will use the same account to control devices in multiple zip codes, but why that would be on for most people i can't understand).
7. You should get prompted to update the device (one of the 3 I installed did not prompt me at first so i went into Settings - Devices - select the device - scroll down to Update Firmware). This took about 2 to 3 minutes for me.
8. Here is where the fun / confusion / frustration begins..
9. You should be prompted to program a schedule for the new device now. You have the option of using their smart watering or to do a manual schedule. Regardless of which you want to do, it tells you that it wants to test the water flow. For me i wanted to do the manual schedule so that honestly threw me off because I was doing this on my couch and I also didn't want to use the smart watering option so I didn't know if I needed to do that to proceed...you don't need to by the way :)
10. If you go through the wizard and do manual setup it will walk you through the options I listed above regarding the "programming"
11. Once you save it, you are all set. Hook it up to your faucet and click the icon that looks like a remote and test it out.
Once you have it programmed it seems reasonably straight forward to use. Providing the zip code means that if it rains, it will / can automatically set a rain delay on (it happened to be raining when i was setting it up and it applied a rain delay automatically). But of course, you can always clear that or adjust it as you see fit which I think is pretty cool.
There are more features and options but this should be enough to get someone started. The app does suck, but the product is totally worth it form what i can tell so far.

Then, after a few weeks, issues start to show up. The app push notification was completely crazy. It sends huge amount of notifications to the point that I had to disable it. And then the worse came -- I noticed that the plants haven't been watered for about a week. I then tried to manually turn on the faucet (through the app) and got the dreaded "Device is taking too long to respond" error.
Then I googled this and got to B-Hyve's user support forum, and found that every problem I ran into have been reported by someone else and it is essentially a software/hardware problem. That is, the product was completely not ready and was released prematurely to the customers. I know this as I am an engineer working for a major company in IoT space. I hate to say it, but customers should learn from my mistake and refrain from buying this product. The damage done to the lawn and plants in their yard due to malfunction of the faucet is going to be huge. A very expensive mistake.
And to add more insult, I tried to contact their support through online chat and nobody responded to my chat. My post on their online forum also went unanswered.
I've been attempting to use this product for over two years, and I've finally just given up and put the two units I have in my e-waste pile. The software is still terrible after all of this time, even worse than I realized initially. By far the biggest problem is that sometimes, for no apparent reason, the units will just stop performing their scheduled "smart watering" routines. If this happened due to some glitch and I was informed of the problem, fine. However they stop watering and most of the time I'm given no notice whatsoever. So I will look at my plants and think "hmm, those look really unhappy..." and then open the app to see that no watering has happened for the past week or two despite clear, sunny California summer weather. They units will still have working batteries, they will have a connection, and I can perform manual watering. On occasion I will be given a low battery warning, or a device disconnection warning, but the vast majority of times I will only learn that something is wrong with the Orbit B-Hyve devices because I can see my plants are in the process of dying. I would strongly recommend against anyone attempting to use this product, if you care at all about keeping your plants alive.
Review from on April 5, 2018 (three stars):
I was excited to buy two of these to replace existing Orbit "dumb" faucet timers. The hardware that attaches to the faucet looks and feels solid, and I assume that it will stand up to the elements as well as past Orbit products. The hub appears to be a USB dongle permanently glued into a power adapter, with a sticker prominently placed saying "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE". This strikes me as a bit odd, like they didn't have the time or resources to design an integrated unit, but it seems to work just fine, so whatever.
I only experienced one problem while doing the initial setup and configuration. During the setup you're taken through some of the steps twice, entering the same information over again. In retrospect, I think that this is to configure both the hub and then the faucet timer, but this is not clear at all. At the time I assumed something was wrong so I quit the app. When I came back it appeared that my devices were all configured, but I could only connect to the faucet timer directly over Bluetooth, and not through the hub. After a bit of fiddling I just deleted both devices from the app, reset the hardware (click the button 5 times), and started the pairing process over again. I went all of the way through, got up and running, and the connection has been fine ever since.
Using the app, I have been able to configure a schedule and control the two separate faucet timers I have installed. Each of my faucet timers are using a different hub since they're at opposite ends of my house and I doubt that the Bluetooth range is sufficient. So, I'm pretty happy about that. The devices work, the connection seems reliable, and the app (iOS) doesn't crash on me or anything.
HOWEVER, the software is real bad. First off, the design and layout are just confusing. You have devices, device groups, zones, programs, etc. In some parts of the apps you're looking at things by zone, others by device, others by device group. Going to the "Home" section of the app shows you the information for one active device, but then when you look at a calendar or zone it's unclear that what you're seeing is filtered to only display things corresponding to the one device, or which device that might be. It would be far more useful if the home screen showed you the status of all of your devices. Then there's just a bunch of bad user interface design components. You are allowed to touch the text indicating the current active device and switch to another one, but there is zero indication of this. The prominent button used to go to the home screen inexplicably changes to a remote once you're there, while all of the surrounding buttons stay the same, etc. The smart watering option appears in multiple places, and sometimes it looks on and others it looks off, and I can't tell when that is referring to a smart program, versus a smart override adding rain delays to my fixed schedule...
Then there are the bugs. None are showstoppers that keep the app from functioning, but they are pretty egregious for a shipping product. Links to help within the app have bad URLs that don't work. The calendar for some reason shows my watering times, but on the wrong days. The battery indicator doesn't seem to change when I look at different devices. Asking Alexa when my next watering is seems to give me the answer in GMT instead of my local time zone (I think?). The website basically doesn't work at all, so don't plan on using that. The basic options from the app don't even exist, not all of my devices are shown, etc.
So... I really want to like this product, but the software needs some serious help. Overall things appear to function (my landscaping is getting watered), and I'm not going to return the product to Amazon, but I'm really hoping that they make some serious app updates in the near future. I'm a bit wary that Orbit doesn't have the software development expertise to handle this, but hopefully this one was just rushed out the door, and they have some UX and QA people on staff who are dedicated to getting things into shape.

First, you'll be guided to update the firmware on both the hub and the sprinkler adapter. The sprinkler will apply the firmware update and turn itself off. I waited until I realized it was off. Hold on the power button for a second and the light will turn green. Firmware was updated. Just touching the power button makes the light flash yellow and nothing happens. Hold the power button down for a second or two.
When adding the hub and the sprinkler in your phone, they are not automatically linked to each other. The sprinkler only worked via bluetooth on my phone forcing me to always be close to it. In the app, you have to add the sprinkler to the same group as the hub and then you can control the water via the hub.
It's cool that I can control the weeping hoses in my front garden from my phone. Hopefully this device is durable, but it has been okay with a few nights of below freezing.
UPDATE: Make sure you have no night of frost in the forecast. This will not withstand the slightest frost. Mine is now leaking from the inside.
4 stars so far. 1 star is being taken away. I don’t know who to point the finger at but my package was not new despite being advertised as such. I could tell as the packages had an Amazon inspection sticker and extra tape. In addition I know it was set up because when I added the hub it states it was already programmed and it wanted to take it over. This caused an unnecessary delay in the programming and set up.
The item on Amazon stated new but clearly not the case. Will be contacting Amazon customer service.
Update: called Amazon customer service and they were very helpful and made it right. To make it right they offered me way more than I was asking. I turned it down for a smaller adjustment. I only wanted the price to reflect a discount of a used item versus the new item price.
Product. After a few weeks the timer is working very well and have had no leaks on the faucet and timer goes off when needed.
