this is a fantastic start to this series. when I first began I wasn’t quite sure where it was going. We have this young boy of five who is being sent away and we have no idea why. His mom is in trouble it seems and wanting to protect him. No one knows where his dad is. Suddenly as he is leaving danger occurs and Tom is now left alone in this world. All he knows is his mom told him to stay strong he is a Alerio and to stay where he is for his parents will get him soon.
That was 8 years and Tom is in a orphanage being treated horribly. He is staying strong but it still has a effect. It allows him to have some unsettled rage against those he sees as oppressors. Not a bad thing but we need to see. One day tom must make a choice for his future. The question is was it a choice. To me it seems that he was enchanted really though the old man seemed to understand. But does Tom. He doubts all around him. His parents always taught him to trust and be good. That was a lesson ingrained in him and stayed throughout his years at the orphanage.
His choice leads him down a fascinating path. A path that sucks you in and has you wanting more. Tom is now at the home of a powerful member of the council and wondering if he can be trusted. Here he meets lifelong friends and trusted allies. they help to mold him and guide him along the way. One night a clan comes for him and he is whisked away. Here is where our adventure begins.
Tom learns many secrets of himself and others in his time away. He sees enemies and his eyes are opened to possibilities. He grows in himself, his confidence and loyalties and who he is becoming. He begins to accept his fate and starts to make alliances. One thing he finds out about is the order and how it fits in his life. He also falls in love and finds his counterpart. So many puzzle pieces are coming together and yet more are beginning to form. Why are the witches wanting him? What about the forsaken petal? How does he fit into that equation? Is he the fifth element on the tapestry? What will happen to his friends/ Will the kindness and learning from Karmen help guide Tom? Will he be strong and forge the old and new in a way that will bring about a sense of peace and order?
As the battles are fought questions arise about those in his lifes allegiances. Not his inner circle but the one who brought him to this world of fighting. His friends stay loyal and true and along the way he learns that friends and goodness come in all people not just those that are told to them to be true. He gets to help in the white forest and see Cody fall in love. I do hope though that this isn’t where he and cody part ways I have a feeling he needs Cody now more than ever.
A wonderfully written beginning to a what I think will be a great series. There is adventure and intrigue without a lot of blood and violence. there is finding out who you and forging your path while becoming strong. there is finding friends, love and loyalty and learning along the way. We have wonderful descriptive writing that isn’t overboard and has you wanting to know more. the story isn’t fast paced and allows the reader to slowly come together with the puzzle while seeing the questions that are forming and remain.
the characters are strong and each help to build the others. they make the story come alive with their thoughts, coming of age, loyalty to each other and their love. they have a sense of family that each needed to feel and also a sense of kinship in which you know they will always in someway touch each others lives. I look forward to reading the next but also want to wait for the one after to come out so I am not left hanging on to know what will happen.
a truly delightful read.

I found it well written and I engaged with Tom, the central character from the start. the plot moves at a good pace and the characters are well rounded. I found myself really caring about what happened next.
the only frustrating thing is that we have to wait for the follow up books - when will they be out please
