But just a few months after Pearl Harbor, FDR’s Executive Order 9066 creates Manzanar: one of ten prisons for American citizens who happen to be Japanese. This one is right in the Richardsons’ neighborhood. Manzanar, with its extremes of heat and cold, its blowing sands and constant winds, is now guarded by armed soldiers, barbed wire fences, and search lights. The Richardsons are dismayed. But somebody local will have to help run the place. How will our friends, the patriotic Richardsons, rise to the challenge?

Not just ordinary patriots

How great to meet up with the Richardson (Pinyon Creek) family again. The author has continued the family's story into World War 2 where we see the younger generation struggling to find a place for themselves. They become part of Owen's Valley history while navigating their way into adulthood. We learn of the the origins of Manzanar, as the residents fight fear and prejudice with the memory of Pearl Harbor fresh in their minds. We are involved in the Merchant Marine and the Women's Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) as they support the war effort. We even learn of the start of the Naval Ordinance Test Station as the Cal Tech scientists use the area for testing bombs and rockets. Residents of the area and fans of history will certainly enjoy more of this engaging saga. .

What is patriotism? What is it to be an "ordinary patriot?" Important questions right now for all of us. Here is a story set in the American West, at the start of WW II, that covers this question in a way that reaches the heart. How do "ordinary patriots" react to the draft in a war that has not involved our country? To the military's rejection of women whose pilot training could save lives? To a Presidential decree that forces American citizens, who just happen to be Japanese, to be locked up in a prison camp? What does an ordinary patriot to do? Ms. Pendleton's characters confront these dilemmas, and more, with a decency that makes you catch your breath, and a bravery that pulls at your heart. A great read for everybody, but especially, I think, for any of us worried about the present state of the Nation.

Frontier Adventure in the Eastern Sierra

The high desert of California's Eastern Sierra is one of the few remaining parts of the continental United States that can be justifiably termed "frontier": remote and austere, with barely livable conditions, it is very sparsely populated even now. Ranchers, prospectors, thrill-seekers, and the occasional hermit comprise a large percentage of the steady population.

Following upon "Pinyon Creek," her remarkable first novel to be set in this region, the author returns with another superb work of historical fiction. This time, World War II provides the backdrop, bringing change, opportunity, and tragedy to the valley. The discovery of military-critical tungsten in the mountains has brought newcomers, and new problems, and the war brings plenty of problems of its own.

But mixed with all the obstacles and tribulations are opportunities, and soon the various members of the extended Richardson family have no shortage of drama in their lives.

As she did in "Pinyon Creek", the author mixes real-life history (mining accidents, battles over land and water rights, the famous activities of Father Crowley and Ansel Adams, among others) with a "you had to have lived there to write like this" sense of what life in the Eastern Sierras was, and is, truly like.

If you enjoy captivating stories firmly rooted in a vivid sense of place, both "Pinyon Creek" and "Ordinary Patriots" will entertain you, and you'll be thinking about frontier life in the Eastern Sierra for a long time to come.
