I wanted an upright vacuum with no special gadgets, long cord, good suction and especially easy to push due to bad shoulder. After trying out Hoover, Meile, etc and returning them, salesman brought this out. It is just right. It adjusts automatically to different carpet depths, reasonable on wood floor (can leave a dust "hedge row" when you change directions), and the cord length means I plug it in once and can do the whole floor of the house. In use for a year and no complaints.

I've owned one of these babies for over 10 years - clean 6-7 homes per week and it's still running strong with NO trips for repairs (I replace the belts when needed, and clean the brush). It is lightweight, but packs a powerful vacuum punch. I recomended this vacuum at a daycare I cleaned for five years and it took a ton of ABUSE at that place with all the food, debris, and small toys that would get caught in it. It held up for me during my tenure cleaning there (althought that particular vacuum had a recurring problem with an electical shortage in the handle - it was a lemon in my opinion and they should have returned it and requested a replacement). Another business I clean for picked one up and it works beautifully. For professional cleaning it's great - helps make quick work of vacuuming without breaking your back, and for home use, it can't be beat - should last forever. It is lightweight, and goes from carpet to solid flooring seamlessly. I love it. The only application it is not good for is very thick, dense, long fiber (shag) carpeting. Too much wear and tear on the motor in those circumstances. As of 1/2011 any price under $185. is good w/ free ship on this particular vacuum.

This is my third Oreck upright. They're great vacuums, and this model is a good, plain, traditional Oreck. They have made some thoughtful improvements over previous models, like a stronger handle assembly, a detachable cord, and a handle to make stairs easier.

It does NOT have a bag docking system, though. If you buy the CC-type bags, as suggested by the Amazon page, you will be disappointed. The one delivered to me uses the older type 8000 bags.

I bought this vacuum after much deliberation. I decided to go with one of the lower-end models of Oreck. I saw this had a great review and was the one used by most hotel maid staff. I had a Dyson before getting this Oreck and I HATED the Dyson. It was so heavy and the dirt canister filled up quickly and because of the ball I could not get under any of my furniture pieces. And the suction was lousy. This Oreck has terrific suction and I am now able to vacuum up anything that is on my carpets and flooring. It does a great job along edges and corners (where the Dyson failed miserably.) The cord is VERY long which is great, but it is heavy. It's a thicker cord than on most vacuums (my husband told me that's because of the length, it requires a larger amp cord?) and I'd bet the cord in its entire length weighs almost as much as the vacuum! That surprised me, I was not expecting this. I do find that when I'm vacuuming along, I am more "aware" of the cord because of its weight, especially when I have to flip it, to get it over something or move it out of the way. But it's not a huge deal. One great plus is that I can vacuum my entire first floor using only 2 outlets. It is VERY lightweight, as advertised, and the bag was easy to install inside the zippered pouch. It was easy to put together, I think I just had to install the bag and attach the handle and that was it. My only negative (besides the weight of the cord) is that the handle height is higher than on most vacuums. I am 5'5" and it took me a littlw while to adjust to this. My husband really likes this taller height and I've now become accustomed to it and it's not a big deal. At first I felt like I was holding my right arm "up" a bit, when pushing it along.Read more ›

Well, it was a decent, no frills vacuum while it worked. 7 months. That's how long it took it to die. I own a small retail store with commercial carpeting. This thing was used to clean less than a couple of hundred square feet twice a week for 7 months. I was vacuuming one night and it just died. No power. I checked the breakers, they were good. I checked the cord, no damage. I checked the whole thing out, it's just not getting power. I've had cheapo vacuums for less than $75 last longer than this, and they were used more often.

Edit: Got in touch with Oreck. They "think" it is under warranty, but I have to drive it to a dealer for service. The closest dealer is 20 minutes away. That's not very convenient for customers to have to drive the vacuum to a repair place.

Edit 2 - Oct 16, 2013 - So Oreck had me take this to a repair place, who had me drop it off. They told me they would call if it would cost anything. They called and told me they had repaired it and it cost me $29.99. I asked if the problem was not covered by the warranty. They informed me that since it was purchased from Amazon, there is no warranty. Take that into consideration when purchasing this vacuum.
