Basically, the file sits in a holder, which it came in. The holder has lines that line up with the saw's bar/chain, providing the correct angle for the file. Then, you stroke each edge a few times in one direction only. Be sure to notice the difference between the links, as one set faces a different direction. So, you put the chain's bar into a vice with the chain on, mark a link, sharpen all the similar links, then reverse the direction and do the other set of links. Use a rag or gloves to move the chain each time, and sharpen the link when it's in the middle of the bar.
It works great! I dulled a chain when a hit a piece of quartz, embedded in the middle of a railroad tie. My chain was so dull, it was like trying to cut the remainder of tie with the backside of a butter knife. So I cleaned up the chain with some solvent (although I've seen other guys just sharpen right through the chain oil), and followed the angle-guide on top and the instructions. It just took a few strokes (I think 5) on each tooth to get it back to new.
This is not a fast process (at least not for me). You do one side of the chain, and then turn the saw around and do the other side, making sure you keep the file in line with the angle guide inscribed on the top of the guide. However, when I got done, my chain was sharper and worked better than when I had our local hardware store re-sharpen a prior chain for me. This kit is well worth your money. I know I'm going to get years of use out of it.
I drill to open up the hole in the wood handle bigger to accommodate for the shank of the file.
Make maintenance and sharpen your saw blade easy.
The size will work on your Ego and Ryobi saw.
Overall good value, I take away one star for making me do extra work to fit the file into the wood handle.
