I was very pleasantly surprised by this set as I don't recall ever seeing it before so I took a chance on it. This is about a man who stars his journey as a member of a wagon train only to become the leader towards the end and it plays just like wagon train except of course without the familier charactors in volved.
I am however confused about why the story begins with the main character starting his journey with a new wife and a father just to see them disappear after the first episode with no explaination about where they went, leaving only the three children to continue in the series. Other than this I did enjoy it.

Loved the Pilot episode but then when the next episode started for no explainable reason the wife and father were both "GONE" . Both characters are missed, especially the wife who was played by the beautiful Blair Brown. Without her the series just wasn't the same and the episodes are pretty boring which shows why the series was cancelled so quickly.

My favorite actor was Rod Taylor and mostly loved him in romantic comedies. Did not think I would enjoy this series, but I was totally wrong. Rod brings wonderful elements to every one of his roles and this one is no exception. I am half way through this series now and am already feeling sat that it will end soon. All the characters fill their roles so well you think you are with them and don't want to end being there. Then, again I can always replay the series. This is a family Western with Taylor playing a single Dad moving his family to Oregon. The outside scenes are great and there is a lot of horseback riding by both Taylor and Charles Napier, another male lead actor. There have been episodes that have dealt with some very personal issues, so it is not all cowboys and Indians fighting. One episode dealt with two wagon trains heading for the same depot and whoever arrived first, got all the food and supplies. The second would have to wait till more food and supplies arrived which would delay their trip. When you think of wagon trains, you don't think of races for food and supplies. For all fellow Arizonans, this series was filmed in the mountains of Tucson back in the late 1970's. I am so happy that I purchased this series and will enjoy it for many years to come.

This DVD set contains the pilot episode I have been looking for for over 30 years. In the US, it was shown as a movie that I saw once and loved. Rod Taylor leads the cast and is excellent, as always. Linda Purl has a role (tho is not in the series). The pilot is good in general, but the part that stayed with me all these years was the little girl of the series family disappeared. She wore this little pair of glasses. During a search for her, the glasses were found hanging like jewelry on an Indian's neck. Good family western that you can actually watch with your family.

'The Oregon Trail' had the potential to be a great series, but only ran for 14 episodes, guess it was a little too late for a western to make it big on TV? Nothing wrong with the 14 episodes made though, and nice to have one of the great Rod Taylor's series put out on DVD! The rugged Australian fits well into the western landscape, and his charming/tough guy personality is always a winner, and, one get the feeling that if you ran into trouble on the trail, Rod's the man you'd want on your side. Yes, the wife was ditched after the pilot episode, but I imagine they figured there would be more scope for story lines if the leader was single?
4 stars for a good effort, took one off for a not quite crisp enough picture, looks to be taked from 16mm prints, surely they still had 35mm masters? Now, if someone would only release the 26 episodes of Rod Taylor's greatest series, 'HONG KONG'!

As much as I like Rod Taylor's acting, this mini-series was a cow flop: boring, monotonous and little action -- only plenty of wagon trains kicking up dust and shot it appeared not in The Plains but on the back lot of some Hollywood studio. Skip this one and reach for a book about The Oregon Trail instead. It's much more interesting.

This was an average series that never was successful. I am disappointed that the final episodes did not get them to California before it was canceled mid-stream.
