Amazing, well researched study of the history of the creation of the German research University model (the dominant paradigm of the US University today). Very well argued and convincing account that the research university rose as a response to the commercialization and commodification of print media. This threw into crisis the belief that printed matter was credible knowledge. The research university rose to replace this with the ethical researching subject as the locus of knowledge; someone who could read and determine the value of texts.
