The Defender Collection
About Orient Watch:
- Has manufactured mechanical watches for over 65 years.
- All movements (the timing device) are made in Japan.
- Producing our own movements ensures the highest quality and speaks to Orient’s true passion, watchmaking.
The Defender
The Defender is the refined field watch that's been missing from your collection. From a utility standpoint, the day, date and 24-hour dial couldn’t be more useful, and at the least, practical for this kind of watch. Stylistically, the high contrast in the dial really brings out this military-inspired motif. At 42mm wide and 12mm thick, the Defender won’t be intrusive tomost. The case is rated to 100m of water resistance, which is reinforced by a screwed-down crown. It’s important to note that the collection features two distinct case finishes. The pebbled-leather strap colorways sport a smooth, matte case finish. The stainless steel bracelet models have a brushed stainless steel finish.
- Automatic, self-winding movement
- Day and date display
- 24-hour display
- Screwed-down crown
Product description
Get lost. With great legibility and fantastic functionality, This serves as a bridge between technical pieces and everyday sport watches – perfect for when you’re stitching to get off the grid.
With its roots dating back to 1901, Orient Watch has specialized in the manufacture and growth of mechanical timepieces. Since 1950, Orient has been at the forefront of the production of mechanical watches in Japan. When it comes to watchmaking, Orient does not have an obscure history: Orient has been producing mechanical watches for more than 60 years. It is one of the top three watch manufacturers from Japan and produces 2 million watches per year. Frankly, it may be the biggest watch brand you’ve never heard of. All of Orient’s movements are exclusively made in Japan and no iteration in manufacturing is outsourced. The implicit value of possessing an Orient watch is that the only way to enjoy its tremendous quality is through ownership.
Orient prides itself on the premise that its timepieces are a “watchmaker’s watch”-- a no frills mechanical watch that is robust and trustworthy.
- Our online reputation suggests that an Orient watch is reliable out of the box. This can be attributed to Orient’s undying dedication to mechanical watches.
- In the eye of the Quartz Revolution in the 1970s, the other top Japanese brands went on to predominantly manufacture quartz, while Orient remained focused on its mechanical movements. And while Orient does produce quartz watches, all movements are supplied by its parent company.
- So what’s the difference between quartz and mechanical? Despite the obvious difference in moving parts, the short answer is seen in the smooth sweeping second hand of a mechanical watch versus the choppy tick of a quartz movement.
As an in-house movement producer, Orient joins a short list of watch companies that actually manufacture their movements in-house and exclusively for their own use. In the industry, it is highly uncommon that a company produces their own movements in-house, and by doing so Orient Watch can ensure that the quality of their wristwatches are held to the highest standards— Orient’s watches have often been lauded for their rich styling, dependability, and tremendous value.
The Defender is a new tactical style watch in 2012. This piece uses our Multi Eyes movement (Movement Code "ET") uses 3 hands, day and date along with a 24 hour indicator. The Case is matte as well as the dials. This use of Matte also makes it an easy watch to read, and makes a great gift for someone with less than perfect vision.

My main complaints:
1) The face and case finish is only available with a leather strap. I'd much prefer a NATO nylon or a metal band.
2) The power reserve really doesn't seem to last more than a day or so, so I often have to set it again if I don't wear a watch on the weekend or wear a different watch.
3) There's no hand-winding, exacerbating point 2. No hacking either
4) No quick way to change the day-of-week complication, so if I don't wear this for a few days, I have to manually advance the movement through several 24 hour cycles.
The Orient Defender is a cool and unique watch that stands out amongst a sea of affordable field watches. It feels like a higher quality watch that is absolutely punching above its price point. Yeah, the movement doesn't hack but what do you expect when hovering around the hundred dollar mark?
The day, date, and 24-hour complications balance out the face of the watch and were very simple to set without even looking at the manual. The entire fit and finish of the watch is quality and I'm very satisfied in that regard. The shiny Orient logo and polished crown are nice touches. Also, the leather strap it comes with is fantastic.
I chose the gray color and I'm quite happy I did. There are enough black and blue watch dials out there and this one stands out a bit more. It also looks great with NATO Straps and the neutral monochrome color works well with a variety of colors.
This is a great watch that I think people new to watches and even the enthusiast can appreciate. I could see this being a great first automatic for a newer watch collector. It's working very well for my needs and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who is on the fence about buying it.

I ordered a gray for my son and a few days later, I ordered a black for myself. There seemed to have been a delivery problem for the black, but Amazon promptly solved it.
The grey watch in the picture instantly has become my son's favorite.
It was sent to me by a seller 'The watch locker'
Though the low contrast of the gray watch face makes it a little difficult to read the days and dates, the design and face color, the brushed SS case, all looked really beautiful. The quality of the leather strap is much better than expected.
What made me puzzled was the accuracy of it.
I couldn't find half a second error after 11 hours, I mean this watch shows not much more than a second error compared to a 'web' atomic clock per day! For my 40 yrs of using mechanical watches I've never seen like this.

However, after about 10 days it started running slow by 3-4 minutes, despite the fact that I was wearing it at least 14 hours a day. After two weeks the mechanism inside the watch (that you can feel winding it when you move) felt loose and much louder than it should, and the watch had to be reset every day as it was losing at least 15 minutes. After three weeks the watch would randomly stop, then start again, before finally completely stopping. When you move the watch back and forth it feels completely loose inside.
I thought this was a half decent brand, and a good entry-level Automatic, but it is Orient's cheapest automatic movement and apparently just not that good. Will be requesting a refund, very disappointed.
However, the watch would randomly stop working. It would require me to shake my hand a couple times to get it going again. I am moving constantly with my hands, all my other automatics lasts me longer than the whole day. I would have to keep adjusting minutes for the first hour. It got busier in the day, I would be losing 5-15 minutes per hour and I would have to keep adjusting it throughout the day. It felt like I was babysitting this watch. After work, went to a bar, come home around 9ish, checked it, stopped somewhere 8pm.
Maybe I got a lemon, everyone else here seems to be enjoying theirs but mine only brought me to disappointment.
Friends tell me "you get what you pay for" but the 100 dollar Seiko SNK809 keeps great time and hasn't failed me yet.
Sadly, this will be a solid no for me, dawg. Maybe a V2 edition of the Defender will come out, maybe I'll drop money on the Sun and Moon or something, I don't know anymore.
