In the case of the book's hero Edmond, it is not a game where a player can restart it to redo their character's attributes but life where there are no restarts. And to Edmond's parents luck is the only thing they wanted their son to have so all his attributes in it. All they could fulfill their dream to win riches at “scratchums” (scratch cards) which so far is out of his parents' reach.
While Edmond lacks intelligence, speed, agility, ect. one thing I think he has in spades is common sense. He unlike his parents can see the get rich schemes they pull only cause grief and a life constantly on the run. Edmond dreams of becoming a warrior. How he does not this he does not know but he wants to try. When he encounters a kind teacher a spark is lit in Edmond that his dream may just become a reality. However, his parents do not make this easy as they only see him as a physical embodiment of luck. Nor does it help that any possession the boy has are taken away and sold for more “scratchums” over essentials like food. Yet despite these terrible odds, Edmond sees a possible path before him and his dream becoming real.
Cantan and Higgin's short story is delightful and funny and for nearly all ages.
Well-written and smart, I liked this one so much, I went out and picked up the second in the series. I will be reading it soon. Strongly recommend this one to the Fantasy reader, as well as Fantasy role-players. It’s fun.
