Between books 3 and 4 - what a difference a book makes. This was by far my favorite in the series because I thought the character development was darn good. If you read book 3 in the series, you’ll remember Claybourne as the brother of Jackson while Anders is his first officer. This is the first time we’re introduced to Siri though and what an introduction it is.

This is a much longer book from the others and was all the better for it. If you’ve not read any of the others in the series – you’re missing out.

Claybourne and Anders sneak onto one of the entertainment aka sex ships to find the guy who Jackson and others are convinced set the bombs that wiped out Kithra. While on the ship they find Siri. Siri’s been held as a prisoner for more than half of her young life - 14 years to be exact. There’s not a lot that Siri remembers from her life on Kithra – her last name for instance. This woman who they are determined to rescue immediately captivates Anders and Claybourne.

The only things that I didn’t agree with were Siri’s sexual feelings so soon after her rescue. Although she didn’t have sex with either of the guys there was some hanky panky that raised my eyebrows and made me wonder – would someone who’d been used for God knows long as a sexual slave and who had zero enjoyment of it actually want to diddle with anyone within days after being rescued? There was much strength in her but there was vulnerability that pulled my heartstring at times. I wondered how come the guys didn't try to have her seek some kind of profession help to deal with all the mental and emotional issues that she faced. Maybe it was because they're pirates and are constantly on the go but I just thought that might have been an angle worth pursing.

Where she came from matters little to Gwinarian sex slave, Siri. Since being kidnapped at the age of nine, her life had been a series of scary and painful experiences as she was bought and sold for the pleasure of men and women who thought nothing of her pleasure. The one bright spot had been tortured in front of her on a regular basis. It was easy to understand why she didn’t trust the men who burst into her holding cell offering an escape. For all she knew she might be exchanging one prison for another.

One of the first things I decided I liked about Siri is that she still had a spark. Anyone else who had gone through what she had would have given up their spirit and would likely have been a mere shell of a person. She had learned to adapt for her own sake. It broke my heart when she talked about or remembered what she’d had to do to stay alive. Meeting and falling in love with Anders and Clay was both unexpected and a huge step in her life. She didn’t know if she could trust anyone enough to freely give of her body. I liked how the author didn’t make it easy for her to give them everything. It was more realistic the way she built their relationship.

There’s clearly a back story between Anders and Clay. It might have played out some in one of the prior books but I haven’t read them…yet. They obviously haven’t been intimate even though they feel something for each other. Clay is the commander of the ship and therefore has to be in control. Anders is his best friend and crew mate on their intergalactic pirate ship. This is the kind of MMF book I love to come across. There’s tension building between the guys. Small touches. Significant looks. Angst. It’s all building up to the moment they let go. I knew it would be hot and loved every minute of it.

A friend suggested this book (and series) to me. This is the fourth and I found myself very comfortable starting here. Amazingly enough, I really enjoyed the menage elements - sexy and enticing without seeming implausible. The worldbuilding and series arc is strong and well thought out. I enjoyed this so much, along with the glancing appearances of previous characters, that I'm going back to start the series from the beginning now! Very tasty read.
