Top customer reviews
I'm a bike head! Currently have a 6 bike stable whereas three are fully racked up (front rear). I've also owned and installed various branded racks over the years, so I'll cover the installation as well as the aesthetics and function here.
I'll save you the comparison review, however choosing the right rack is all about your riding style and use.
1.Are you planning to load using front panniers for serious touring? Then this rack isn't for that.
2. City touring, general recreational loading and grocery getting? Perfect rack!
3.Just need an extra option with a sturdy platform and bungee net? Boom! Excellent choice.
4. Speed club rides and weight conscious seekers need not apply. This is a burly rack. Not the heaviest I've owned, but not a featherweight.
Pros: packaged well. One piece weld and built like a tank grill. Black Paint is the best I've seen on racks that cost more. Seems impossible to scratch. You'll have to work for it which is great. This is a Heavy duty rack at a great price. I have racks that have cost me over $100 that don't feel as solid as the origin 8.
1 (Con) : Could be a simple installation on some bikes, but not the LHT. Easy enough to understand if you're familiar and handy, however no real instructions so you'll need to be hardware savvy if you catch a snag in your installation.
My only gripe (if you had to pull my leg) is it would that much nicer with rail option. That can go a long way to secure items loosely when you don't want the chance of a failed or forgotten bungee net or cable.
For my bike I had to fickle with adding washers and extenders to make it fit it's best. Was easy enough but just be forewarned that every bike could be different and if you're a DIY person then prepare to think around any issues with extra goodies from your hardware stash. I happen to own lots of hardware knick knacks that did the job.
Should being handy not be in your repitior, no judgment ...simply take it to your lbc. The pros have seen it all...The rack is worth it!
Aesthetic and function :
So... looks boss on my bike. Very tough and functional as I'm currently set up to run around town getting small boxes, groceries, strapping a pair of tennis shoes and a basketball (when rear rack w/panniers is already loaded) etc. ..The options are nearly limitless. Front racks rule! The weight doesn't bother me and I like to see my equipment in front of sometimes. Steadies the front wheel and makes the ride more grounded in the streets.
Just get a cargo bungee net and you're golden!
The stems that extend down to the wheel axel have an inner adjustable rod. This rod has multiple screw holes so you can adjust the height of the rack. However, the holes on one of those rods were not threaded. So the supplied bolt was of no use as you can not even screw it in. Therefore the rack is unmountable out of the box.
In addition to that, the washers supplied are too small to fit the bolts for the stem attachment and the low quality of the bolts means they are likely to strip with a little torque.
There is something loose inside the rack that rattles, which should not be for a rack this price.
The rack itself looks good and is sturdy which would have deserved a 4 out of 5 if Origin8 would do some quality assurance on there product.
to be continued...
Checked the mail box today and the mounting hardware was there. Bells Bike shop did an excellent job getting it out as promised.
Bike is currently out getting a (longer) solid front axle.
Buyers be aware if you have "quick disconnect" front axle it will have to be replaced.
