Anyways, this bell is a great value, and shipped quickly via Niagra. It has no unsightly stickers, decals, or markings, and is every bit as beautiful and swell sounding as any of the other bells I've purchased from Soma or Crane. I half suspect that they're all produced at the same factory, and then shipped out with different packaging. At any rate - don't hesitate. It's as good a bell as you'll find anywhere.
I'd give it 5 stars, except that it sounds too good, (not close to the usual cheap bell on bikes that go Ching-Ching), So people don't immediately identify the sound as coming from a bicycle.
I suggest you ring this at least twice, to help people locate the direction of the sound, and know that it is an intentional warning, rather than someone dropped a metal tube on the ground with a single dong.
It is easy to hear from a long distance away (assuming you mount it with the top of the bell facing up, most of the vibration & sound occurs from the sides, not the top/bottom).
Curiously, the ringing has the biggest effect on Squirrels, The sound sends them running from the bike path in terror.
Yes, it's pretty loud.
But, if you press it gingerly, to make it a little less loud, it won't ring at all, because the spring is pretty stiff. So, it's pretty much very loud or nothing.
The other thing is the sound is really lugubrious. It struck me immediately that it sounded forlorn... then someone else said exactly the same thing to me when they heard it. It might seem petty, but it's just not a pleasant sound, it's between two notes or something. Granted, it's a warning bell, so, arguably, you might say that's even better. But I think the sound irritates people a little, because it almost sounds "mean," if that makes any sense at all. I ride on a track, so I pass the same people many times, and I don't particularly want to annoy them.
And I am pretty handy with making adaptations for things like this, but just making it fit doesn't help. The bell won't ring if the makeshift adapter dulls the vibration. Took lots of rigging to get this one right.
