Squeezebox remote: too expensive and not well thought out

My wife and I like to listen to the Squeezbox through our pillow speakers before we fall asleep, or if we're having trouble sleeping. I purchased this remote so that my wife could control the radio, which sits next to my side of the bed, from her side. With its myriad functions, it lacks the only one I need - the ability to select one of the six preset buttons on the radio. (If there's any advantage to having only six preset buttons, it's that you can easily remember which button is for which channel!) I'd assumed that I'd be able to select a preset by clicking its corresponding number on the controller. No such luck. It requires you to scroll through all the favorites you've set online - but as you scroll, you can't tell which channel you're hearing. If you're already having trouble getting to sleep and then start playing with this controller, you'll be wide awake with frustration before you find your channel!

A warning about the pictures shown by some sellers.

There are AT LEAST four different IR remotes for the Squeezebox line: the original and v2 remote, another for the v3 "Classic" (and a back-lit version of that for the Transporter), a stripped-down "mini" remote for the Radio, and yet another one for the Touch. While all will operate the full product line, the later ones (for Touch and Radio) have a Home button which is extremely useful for those models.

Some sellers are haphazardly using photos of one style remote to sell another. Ask and confirm exactly what they are selling first, or you'll likely get one of the earlier ones w/out a Home button as we did when a Touch version was pictured.

Granted, the mini and touch remote faces can eventually get "tacky" as the plastic degrades, but that is at least known. Getting an earlier version remote without home button and prone to IR transmitter failures (the v3) instead is not a welcome surprise.

Of course, spending $5-10 for the Orange Squeeze or iPeng app solves the SB-IR remote conundrum altogether.

False advertising of product, not true to order

This is not the original retail Logitech Squeezebox remote. It is some kind of generic 3rd party remote made by another company. There is no home button like shown in the picture and the original Logitech remote does not have a backlit set of keys (and the backlighting isn't even at all). As well, the Logitech symbol printed on the bottom of the remote is slightly lopsided. This isn't the remote I ordered. The remote is also significantly larger than the original smaller remote (which I already have, that is broken, sitting right next to me). I'm debating whether or not to return this item as it still works well, but I do not enjoy being duped by a seller.

Only recently received, but works well with my Logitech Crunchbox. I believe the interface to be intuitive, but I suspect that others will not agree. Mine appears as the picture I see for the remote, though that appears not to have been the case for others writing reviews. Using a pair of AA batteries, the remote has ease of battery replacement.

I bought this unit thinking that it would be much better than the remote that came with the internet radio. It came without the instructions booklet. After trial-and-error learning I was able to use the 10 buttons to set up 10 favorite radio stations,a quite useful feature that the tiny remote control does not have. Therefore this expensive remote is a must.I still believe it should come with the instructions booklet.

I did not receive the unit depicted in the photo. I received a much smaller one (it does not have the number pad shown on the bottom) but it works quite well. I can change channels, change volume, change tunes, turn the radio on and off or set a wake up or sleep shut off time all from the remote. I don't know if you'd need the number pad after all.

I'm a "logitech's squeezebox" lover. The remote is my must have item. Because I'm a lazy one.
It has "Favorite" button, and "Sleep", "Now Playing", "Home", "music shuffle", "music repeat" buttons too! The reception is good. And The touch of the buttons are good enough. (not too heavy nor too light.)
