Top customer reviews
Rudy Hunter does a great job demonstrating everything, and has a great, friendly air about him as he demonstrates everything, generally quite clearly.
My only complaints, and these are minor, are as follows:
The DVDs are letterboxed, instead of anamorphic.. This is a format that should have died in the 90s (arguably, it should never have been born), and these were produced in 2005. This mean, on an older 4:3 TV, there are black bars on the top and bottom of the image, effectively just cropping the image; the image itself is still a normal 4:3 image, but with the bars 'burned' into the image. This means the active image area is only about 2/3 of the full frame. On a widescreen TV, this gets worse; the actual frame is a 4:3 image with black bars, but this is then centered in the wide screen of the TV, so you now also have black bars down the sides. If this was anamorphic, the image would properly fill a wide screen edge to edge, top to bottom; on a 4:3 TV, the player would scale the image to display as letterboxed (or pan & scan if the player has that option). There is no good reason to produce anything in a burned in letterbox like this, as TVs and players can adjust the image to fit; letterboxing only wastes screen space and results in an image that loses about 1/3 of the resolution. For this presentation, it would have worked better if they just left the bars off and stayed in full screen mode, like their title screens.
My only other complaint is that Rudy does kinda skimp on a couple tricks, like Ultra Card Divination, where certain details are not covered at all. To be fair, the book also misses the case for aces in this one as well, but a bit of trial and error will get you around these missing details. Overall, he's exceptional in his presentations.
I returned this set and got the 5-DVD version by R. Paul Wilson, which is much stronger. I am using it with the classic book of the same name, and the combination is dynamite. First read about a sleight in the book, then see it demonstrated by Wilson on the DVD--a great way to learn.
